Separating bird species in decoys?

Postby ducks~n~bucks » Mon Feb 10, 2014 12:57 am

Do you guys do this? Do ducks segregate themselves? This year we segregated our decoys based on species, wigeon with wigeon, mallards with mallards, divers with divers, and intermingled coots with all. Is this a good idea?

seriously I spend a lot of time looking at ducks in the valley and you don't normally see them mixed up on the water.

That is what I have seen, but I don't spend a whole lot of time looking at ducks, because I don't live close enough to them to. I have noticed that pretty much all divers intermix, and that everything hangs out with coots. I've even seen wigeon steal food from coots after the coot came up from diving.

FF it completely depends not the field. North and south checks and east and west checks make all the difference in the world.

Not your hooks and x's. Just for your species.

Don't you leave the big spread out all year?

Yes I do but I'm going to pretend what I know about setting large spreads is insignificant.

I'm just gonna take a wild guess here on his spread. 5 dozen mallard floaters, 1 dozen full body mallards, 3 dozen sprig floaters, 1 dozen full body sprigs, 2 dozen wigeon, 1 dozen teal. Then he has 6-10 full body or shell specks and 6-10 full body or shell snows either on the back side of the spread toward the center of the check, or about 80 yards down the levee from the blind. Am I close?

Ok, back to serious questions. How would you place 1 1/2 dozen mallards, half dozen widgets, and a dozen coots? Hunting from a point about 20 yards long, and about 5 yards wide?

With that few of decoys it really doesn't matter.

We hunt with more, but that's all of our puddlers. If we're on the lake we also run 4 dozen cans, 1 dozen bluebills and 1 1/2 dozen honkers.

I mix the black ducks, mallards, and mallards. Keep the honkers, divers, teal, and woodies separate from the main group and each other.

I don't get too hunt them much anymore but the divers seem way more racist than puddle ducks. Especially butterballs.

More seriously, I tend to segregate most loosely by species:

and have found poule d'eau (aka: coot) rafts particularly effective:

But I put most of my teal close to big ducks in the belief that their size difference adds to the illusion of life from a distance:

Then, again, it may have been my spread that sucked so bad all the ducks went to Hudson's end of the parish this year...
