Sealing the hole in a decoy is easy, hot glue, 5200, etc.... but getting the water out of the body before starting the repair was a PIA. You can squeeze the decoy, but that will take forever if there is any amount of water in it. Finally figured out how to do it "assa style", using a hypodermic needle and syringe. You can stick it in the tail, above the waterline (manufacturer blow hole), hold the decoy upright, and suck that stuff out before starting, and seal that hole along with the original hole when done. Gave about a half dozen of my gadwall dekes a new lease on life.

I'm not so enterprising. I just poke a small hole in the top of the decoy's head to let air in, and the water then pours out of all but the smallest of leaks, like tiny cracks where keel meets decoy, in which case I'll make another small hole to let the water run out.

I'm thinking about installing a speaker, and mp3 player, and a motion sensor that will trigger the 2 live crew song "Me so Horny", just for good measure... ;)

PAINTING SOME DECOYS

"Hey, I'm thinking about painting some decoys. Anybody ever done it?"

-Yep, wash them good first, and get all the old paint off. Then use Krylon for Plastic.

-I didn't wash mine good enough, and the paint flaked.

-I did, and they look great. I used Rustoleum

-Never done it. Gonna follow this thread.

-Me either. Interested.

-Yep, like was said, it's all about the prep.

-You guys use acetone to clean them, or just wash them?

-Dawn

-Acetone

-Denatured alcohol

-Acetone here

-Just soap and water here

-Acetone for me as well

-I used the Krylon Ultra-Flat hunting paint on mine. Turned out great. Here's a pic.

-WOW! Those do look good. I'm going to try that. What did you clean them with?

-Denatured alcohol.

(two months later)

-Here's a pic of my finished decoys. I'm happy with how they turned out. I used acetone to clean, and Krylon Ultra-Flat paint. Doing the heads was tough, but I'm happy with how they came out. (pics)

-Look good man!

-They'll hunt!

-Good looking decoys!

-(thumbsup)

And that's what it would be over and over again. Thanks, but I've got a box of Saltines in the cupboard. Now, let's look at the alternative:

"Hey, I'm thinking about painting some decoys. Anybody ever done it?"

-Yep, wash them good first, and get all the old paint off. Then use Krylon for Plastic.

-Krylon sucks for anything but painting your name on the water tower. I just buy new Storm Fronts.

-Storm Fronts suck

-I've had Storm Fronts for 4 seasons, and they still look new.

-Of course they do, DH, because you never hunt

-Fuck you, Boot.

-I have Storm Fronts, too, and for the money, they're awesome

-Same here

-I didn't wash mine good enough, and the paint flaked.

-I did, and they look great. I used Rustoleum

-Never done it. Gonna follow this thread.

-Me either. Interested.

-Yep, like was said, it's all about the prep.

-You guys use acetone to clean them, or just wash them?

-Dawn

-Acetone

- I kill all my critters with acetone. It keeps skunks from spraying when they're caught in a trap.

-Why would you want a skunk?

-I don't want to catch them, but when I do, if I can get the skunk essence out of the carcass, I can sell it for $30 an ounce

-What the hell do people want that for?

-Believe it or not, it goes into perfume, and a lot of other fragrances.

-No shit?

-No shit.

-Denatured alcohol

-Acetone here

-Just soap and water here

-Another vote for just buying new Storm Fronts. You can get them for $20 a dozen here http://www.evcoplastics.com/

-Holy crap, that's cheap. I picked up a parka for $10 and a pair of decoy gloves for $4! Thanks for the link!

-You wear gloves to pick up decoys? Pussy.

-Fuck you, it's cold in January.

-Good thing you don't have to pick up many dead ducks, DH

-Fuck you, Boot.

-Acetone for me as well

-I used the Krylon Ultra-Flat hunting paint on mine. Turned out great. Here's a pic.

-WOW! Those do look good. I'm going to try that. What did you clean them with?

-Denatured alcohol.

-Is that the stuff you feed to college chicks to make them get naked?

-No, that's chloroform

-I always get those two mixed up.

-(thumbsup)

-Should've used choloroform

I picked up a tube of that 3M 5200 last week, and just got around to fixing some of the leakers today...
That has got to be the nastiest, stickiest, shit on the face of the planet!!
And then, if just getting a little on my hands wasn't enough to irritate me, the whole fucking tube split open while squeezing it!
I'm done with that shit...

However, it was probably the saving grace of many a GHG removable keel decoy. Those pieces of shit crack where you can't really patch them. I filled the front of the keel slot up with 5200, slid the keel in oozing it out, and then caulked the keel to the decoy with the 5200...
Sound messy???
You would be right...

And, it bares mentioning...not one single one of my G&H dekes needed anything done to them.

So...you bought new G&H decoys to try them out this year?

I wish, no money in the decoy fund this year.
Those are probably 12-13 years old and really don't look much different than the day I bought them. There are a lot of really good looking decoys on the market these days, but if I had to replace my spread tomorrow, I might just go all G&H.
I wish they'd update their mold a little for MY eyes, but I don't think it matters to the ducks.
They're just a darn solid decoy...
And, I think they're still made in 'Merica!!

See! That's what I'm talking about! Dakotas look great, but I'd be hard pressed not to buy G&H.

My Dakotas look fine, but I also single slot bag them all. I doubt you'll find a flocked decoy that can be thrown in a mesh bag all season and not show any wear.
To achieve success, one must possess dedication, passion and a boatload of decoys.

Mine are slotted to, I left them out between trips to ark once. They set out for a couple weeks that didn't help them much. They're tough though, they were froze solid in ice and I rode 4 wheeler thru busting it up and none busted

I finally got around to finishing this one last night...
The funny thing is,...this decoy was dug out of a log jam on the river! I didn't get a "before" pic, but it didn't have any paint at all left but it's been riding around with the rest of them for years!

In some respects,...you could say that, but generally? Probably not. ;)

I'd say this is more of a product of the situation I've been in for the last few months...
Recovering from a shoulder surgery, being real limited to what I CAN do, and having extremely too much time on my hands.
Any other time...it'd have been pitched in the trash can!
