Ok, getting ready to buy a 24" 120W one for the Jeep. Got a question- is the wiring harness necessary, or can I just wire this bitch into the battery, and put an inline fuse in it? The light is only $58, and the damn harness, with a cheesy little switch is another $17. Are these "relays" and such listed in the harness components necessary? Because it's LED does it need to be stepped down/up/sideways or something? Or can I just go buy 30 feet of wire, a switch I like, and an inline fuse and go to town?

I've used the crap out of the one on my boat and it didn't come with a wiring harness. I think I just used 16 gauge wire to a switch panel with a fuse. The panel is wired strait to the battery.

Do I have to have a cover over it when I'm on-road?

In California you need covers if the switch is in the cab or drivers compartment but I have no idea about the people's republic.

It's probably a safe bet then that I need a locking cover, and the key must be stored in a separate locked container not within reach of the driver, if an exterior compartment such as a trunk is not available.

Just so I'm sure- there were no special "boxes" or anything in the wire, just wired from the battery to switch, with an inline fuse (or fuse of some sort)?

It's this newfangled LED technology that gets me. Figured I needed some sort of transformer, resistor or (fill in name of some other electrical shit that I don't know about here)

I have lights on my headache rack for backing down the boat ramp so I mounted the switch on my tool box so I didn't need to find covers for the lights. I highly doubt ill ever be stopped for it but those CHP get crazy sometimes so I figured better safe then sorry.

Believe it or not, I don't need covers. Even if mounted above 42", still don't need covers, just can't be turned on on the road.

I've been thinking about doing something similar...
But, the center of the bow has always been the spot my dog comes in and out of the boat when my blind is up.

So, I've been thinking about these at each side of the bow...
http://www.amazon.com/Off-road-Headligh ... +light+bar

Any of you light geeks ;) know if they'll be sufficient "head lights"?

Another thought would be 2 of these, again on each side of the bow...
http://www.amazon.com/36w-LED-Spot-Work ... +light+bar

Maybe even just one of those...?? But I think just one might mess up the balance of feng shui thus angering the duck gods... ;)

Make sure you check out eBay. They're the exact same lights, and last night while I was killing time browsing, they seemed to be about $10 than on Amazon.

Yep...thanks.

I just don't know if either will be bright enough. I've always navigated with a hand held spotlight, and I'd sure like to be able to just hold on and GO!! :)

Depends on what you like for light and what kind of places and speeds you run. You won't be happy with the 18w ones unless you get 4. 2 36w would be the minimum.
But those are also just "spot" lights. Which means the beam angle is 30*. You'll be able to see far, but up close you'll only have a 10' circle of light.
The bigger bars have a combo 30* spot beam and 60* flood beam.
Mine is 120w and it is the minimum I would want. But I like lots of light and generally run open water.

I can't wait to put this botch on the Jeep. If it's not like the sun's out at night, I'm gonna be disappointed.

You won't be disappointed. I get the "holy fuck" reaction a lot with mine and it's only the 14 inch bar.

I wanted the 34", but out there with a tape measure, and how big they are, I just had to face the fact that 24" is all I'll be able to squeeze in there.
