Trolling motor help.

Broke into the troller today to see if I can find out what's wrong with it.
To me these brushes don't look real good. Real dark and have almost a coating on them. Should they be replaced?

All you dumb fuckers that told me hooking it up 24v wouldn't double the thrust can eat shit.

It's an electric motor, doubling voltage increases the power. That's a no-brainer... who told you it wouldn't?

:shaking head smiley:

The torque on the motor shaft is caused by magnetic flux.
The magnetic flux is proportional to amp turns.
The Amp turns are proportional to coil turns (resistance) and voltage.

if you don't change the number of coil turns and increase the voltage the flux has to go up... hence the torque goes up.

Would have been nice if you showed up before I ripped it all apart. On the 12v switch 1-5 speed is like 6-10 when hooked up 24v. I'm really happy right now. Thought I was going to need a new troller.

Did your brushes look like that at 12v? Not sure changing to 24v would hurt them, but I don't know what they rated them for either.

When the smoke comes out, THEN you know the voltage was too high! :D

It's a 12/24v troller. There is a switch on the foot pedal to switch back and fourth. I didn't want to mess with 24v so I just hardwired it 12v. Then realized the thing was a turd and wondered if the reason for the 24v setting was for more power. Which i now found out it is. Haven't had it on the water since I switched to 24v, but the prop sure spins a lot faster dry.

Are there specific models where the brushes can or cannot be replaced? Definitely something for me to consider, since I'll be using 12V, and probably wide open most of the time.

Got a new problem.
Motor won't start turning unless I get it started by hand, then it has no power...I can stall it out with pressure from 1 finger.
What part is most likely burned up?
Anybody know where I can possibly get parts at a decent price? It's a motorguide.

You went 24 volt and fucked it up 50/50

Haha. Pretty sure that wasn't the problem...but never know I guess.

Holy shit nuff. Just buy a used one off Craigslist it'll be less of a pain in the ass and likely cheaper than rebuilding a trolling motor.

I'm kinda leaning that way. Just wondered if it was possibly something simple to fix.

I'm just not very good with electrical stuff. Anything short of a loose wire or anything that's gona require soldering becomes trash.

I can wire stuff, but I don't deal with motors much.

Did you already replace the brushes? Maybe one came loose?

I didn't do anything to the brushes when I took it apart. They were soldered in so I didn't mess with it.

I found a MinnKota 70lb on craigslist for $375 I'm going to look at today after work.

I'm thinking that it might be the flux capacitor. On the other hand, it might be the exhaust thrust bearing and the electrical calibrator bushing that are in opposition of one another. After you've checked those, take a look at the voltage attenuator control lever and the propeller modulator.

seriously, loosen all the screws or bolts in the motor housing and check the operation it could be that you have torqued the housing incorrectly. If so tighten it back up carefully. Good luck.

Probably just going to but this one on craigslist if it's as nice as the guy says it is. Then I'll mess with mine and if I get it to work I'll see if I can get a few bucks back out of it.

I know this is a silly question but, did you possibly forget to put the spring back in behind the brush(s)? Those brushes have plenty of more wear left in them, really.

I put them back in, but thanks for the idea. It has worked good since I put it back together. Probably around 40 hours or more on it this year so far. I bought it used for $250 2 years ago and probably put 300 hours on it, so I think I got my money out of it.
