It's only learning if you do it better the next time. :-)

Duckmaster boat rebuild.

Postby FlintRiverFowler » Mon Oct 20, 2014 6:00 pm

The hot coat cured but looks like some shit is still getting torn out. Do over time. It's like the cloth didn't bond to the boat on that side. Not cutting any corners here so I'll cut that out and redo when I tab the front half.

May have spoken a little too soon. It's really starting to stiffen up over there. I'll let the space heater run over night and check it in the morning

Fitting the forward section of floor in has now become my trouble. Everything lined up perfect before. Pretty sure what I should've done was fit both pieces in loosely before I glued and tabbed the back section. Dammit.
Ollys right. It's a learning process. If I ever have to re-deck a glass boat again it's going to be a jam up job. I'm just hoping not to screw this one up too badly.

You'll get it. Last time we did glass work at the shop I was just starting out and just mixed epoxy and got stuff for them. They made it seem easy. Just had to work quick to get done before stuff started getting tacky and make sure all the air was out.

Glueing in the front section. Gettin ready to tab in possibly tomorrow. Not sure yet.
My sister is getting married Saturday and I've been commissioned to cook BBQ for the reception.... Something like 120 people cookin 50 lbs of Boston butts. I took the day off Friday so likely will be cooking and glassing all day long.
I'm planning to start the smoker up when I get home from work tomorrow. Tab this in, then glass the floor out Friday morning.

Thought I'd keep my chip brush workable by leaving it in a cup of acetone.... Well the acetone evaporated and the resin stayed behind. Rendering my brush useless.

Use lacquer thinner. Clean it out right away then hang it up to dry out.

I guess if that's all you're doing that's true.
One gallon cleans a lot of brushes though. We buy it by the 5gal buckets at the shop.

1708 is hard to wet out.
Learned my lesson last time and wore pants and sleeves.
Tabbing is complete. Just gotta lay the fabric and wet it out on the flat part of the floor. If this dries fast enough it'll get laid out tonight. Otherwise... Tomorrow.

Here's a close up of what 1708 biaxial cloth looks like.
Top side has two layers woven at a 45 degree angle.and the stitching is visible

Back side has 3/4 oz chop strand mat stitched to it.

Got a snide remark from the wife about all the dead soldiers in the garage when I had her take the pics. After she called me gay for wanting pics of me working on the boat for my internet friends.... Sigh.
