Won't be long before the hawks move down to put a damper on the pigeons' exercise periods. Only good thing about the hawk migration is that the geese aren't far behind.

According to my sources... the hawks are on their way.

Our big influx is usually in October. Have to keep the homers locked up until late afternoon then or have hawks camping in my oaks like buzzards.

We have them year round and they definitely keep my birds thinned down for me...
I'm not very good at telling the difference between a Cooper's Hawk and a Sharp Shinned, but from my (very limited) research, I've read that one of them are really schedule oriented. In other words, if you feed and let fly at 4:00 every day,...they'll be there waiting at 3:55!
I've seen that first hand, I just don't know which one it is. The older birds can usually out maneuver them, but the young stupid ones are easy pickens...

Last spring, I had just turned the birds out and fed them when one of my old work buddies called, so I sat in a lawn chair under the nearest tree and chatted with him for a bit while I watched the birds fly.
One of the young stupid ones had lit on the power line right in front of me. Out of the corner of my eye I catch movement, so I crank my head around and this big ole Red Tail has a radar lock on the wire bird and he's in stealth glide mode...

I tell my buddy, "Hold on a minute", and start walking over to try to spook either the hawk or the bird off, but just about that time, he kicks out his landing gear and grabs it right there! But...He screwed up!

Instead of just flying off, he dropped about 15' of altitude in less than half a second and was literally 2' from my face! We made eye contact about the time I hollered, "Get outta here you sonofabitch!" (seemed appropriate at the time)
It scared him enough that he let loose and the pigeon flew off unscathed!
True story...

You bet hawks migrate, or at least what seems like most of them. We've no shortage in the Summer, but come Fall it's a show. The sharpshins are too small to be much trouble, but the Coopers are a pain:


Haven't seen them keep a schedule, but when I see one hanging around, I keep the birds locked up for a week or so, and they've long since given up and moved on by then. I feed in the mornings, and training birds are kept from it until flown, so they beeline to feed and the safety of the loft. Tend to let the whole loft come and go at will in the Summer, as long as nothing's staking it out, then cut Winter losses down to nearly nothing by only opening the loft for the last hour or so of daylight.

Have known pointing dog guys who only kept black homers on the notion that the hawks won't bother with what looks like crows, but my last known hawk loss was a bruiser of a black one I'd kept as a breeder for some years. Watched a Cooper's pick him out of a party colored assortment of potential targets on our driveway. Does seem they're most apt to target the bright (more tempting) birds I prefer for most retriever training, but they get pretty hawk wise if they make it the first few weeks out of the loft. Oldest bird in my current loft is a nine-year-old white hen. Probably just put the gris-gris on her...
