I would think you better use a shit ton of cutting oil and back out frequently. Unless there are special dies for stainless. Never tapped stainless before

I took my subaru apart to replace a ball joint, tie rod end, and the struts on the front. Turns out I've been rocking a busted half shaft for who knows how long. The inner joint is nonexistent. Somehow the boot didn't even tear. Only reason I noticed was I was getting ready to put things back together and thought I should check for play in the half shaft. There's some play allright...

The good news for me, if not she, is that I had think about that.

I think you need to use a 2 flute gun tap and there is a cutting fluid called Micro Finnish that works well for Stainless. For every 1/2 turn in, back out 3/4 turn. Use a tap guide and make sure the hole is the proper size. Some folks actually go one size larger in stainless when planning to tap threads.

my advice for tapping, if its a shaft get someone with a lathe and make it easy but if not very slow and alot of lube, backing in and out is a must. stainless is actually very soft so it will gull easy

Yea it does but with the cheap living up there it's high on my list of places to retire. I want to make my pension go as far as I can and the UP is one of those places you can do that.
