A moment of silence...

Today, after 16 years of faithful service on hunts from Maine to Alaska and Kansas to North Carolina and many, many points in between...after hunts in flooded timber and muddy cornfields, from saltwater seas to the Great Lakes...after killing 28 species of waterfowl, and countless rounds fired on clays and crows and pigeons and starlings....the recoil spring in my old trusty H&K SBE, broke.

Ha, ha. Don't I wish.

16 years ago, they made these with steel recoil tubes...No joy with Brownells, Midway, Mid-South, Natchez, GunBroker or GunsAmerica...so SRM is pretty much the only option @ $155

The scoter are definitely farther along in their plumage cycle than the old squaw are, all the drake squaw we killed the past 2 weeks had pretty short tails and the bills were just starting to shade pink...they need another month to get really good.

Honestly though, I've considered "retiring" that gun...so many good memories, I'd be devastated if anything serious ever happened to it.

Glad I put Sure Cycles in my HK SBE and Montefeltro as a preventative measure back when they were something like $40. But I don't understand why can't you put a Wolff recoil spring (http://www.gunsprings.com/index.cfm?page=items&cID=2&mID=10) in your old tube?

I'm gonna try real hard to get it apart Rick...but I'm afraid that I'll bugger up the tube trying, I mistakenly thought it was sealed but it does appear that the "stud" end is threaded into the tube...any bright ideas on getting it apart?? (Mind you, it's been at least 16 years since it was last disassembled)

I've always told myself that when that thing failed I was going to get the SRM tube, figured it would have been long ago.

If memory serves, the "trick" is that the threads on the outboard end are Loctited with the red variety that requires heating to loosen.

That was my guess...do you recall if there is any kind of buffer in the tube?? I guess I could look at the schematic on Brownells too

I didn't remember anything but the spring and part the bolt link butts up against to push it, which could be called a buffer, but the schematic shows there's a little more to it.

You might be right as soon as LST came it all stopped. It's a very warm morning so I don't know if the birds are just being lazy not needing to fly to warm up or what. I've only heard one gunshot far off too.
