Drill speed was to slow and feed rate to fast. BTW they make composite toed boots. Way more comfortable. I wear mine everyday.

What kind of mount were you making for the boat?

Drill speed was good, I probably was going to fast. I have though about getting the composites, I look at those when I go to replace these.

It wasn't for the boat, it was for work. The kicker mount should be in soon tho.

Actually, I would say, what is more uncomfortable steel toed boots or toes smashed or cut off in what is left of nonrated boots?
As for the whole engineer running a piece of equipment........................dumb. Unqualified people should not be allowed in the same room with any equipment.

Actually to graduate from most good engineering schools you have to take a senior design/build class and to use any of the equipment you get qualified by the shop tech.

I am not saying I am at a machinist level, but I know how to operate most equipment to some level.

Yeah Flight, to quote Montana "College guarantees you a high paying job because you have experience". at least I think that's what he said.

I've taken classes. I've worked production in shops. Two different animals. I'm far from an expert or have the time some do here but it's not the same.

It is different, but learning the basics and being an expert are far different thing that qualify you to do far different thing.

Precisely. All things are random, but all possible things have a 50/50 chance of occurring.

I was drilling a hole in some aircraft grade aluminum on the drill press, the bit bound up on in the last hole and started spining the piece I was working on which threw the 50 pound clamp (which should have been bolted down ) off the stand and 4 feet to the ground. Where it landed on a corner right on my middle toe, left foot. Some how it did not break...

So, was I lucky I didn't break my toe or unlucky that it happened in the first place?

I'm going with operator error. Yeah, operator error times two.

One, you didn't tighten your clamp tightly enough and two, you pushed the bit too hard.

Possibly three, you dinna put on enough lubication, and you mis-spelled spinning.

I will have to politely disagree. I've been in aviation for 35 years. Seen bad things happen to good people, and poor performers survive themselves.

Just remember if you're unlucky it does not matter how good you are.

You do realize there are several different engineering sciences, right? Do you honestly believe that Chemical engineers, electrical engineers, electronics engineers etc. etc. are given a class in drillpress operation. Not to mention that there are hundreds, possibly thousands of Universities that teach all of these sceinces and, you believe they all hold to the same curriculum?
Maybe you might at least qualify your statement by claiming or stating you are a mechanical engineer first. Just sayin'

You must have been going to fast. Or your tooling was way extremely dull. Aluminum should cut like butter on a drill press. How deep where you drilling?

Depending on what I'm doing. If it's punching numbers all night. Flippy Floppies are awesome.

On the other hand. If I'm chucking up 200 pound parts with a crane all night on to the lathe mill or grinder. You better believe I'm wearing boots.
