What's your dream hunt?

Postby IndianaYakFish » Sat Nov 22, 2014 9:05 pm

My place of employment is possibly having some down time next year and I'm hoping to take advantage of it by planning an out of state (or country) waterfowl hunt. Have an invite with friends on a DIY Saskatchewan hunt, so will probably head up there with them. But wanted to see what you guys consider your dream waterfowl hunt and possibly get some other ideas. And no, I don't mean a few hours in the duck blind with Jennifer Aniston either.

Alaska. Aleutians Islands. King Eider and Harlequin.

King Eider in Alaska, or somewhere I can see a lot of pintails.

Somewhere for King Eiders or a good woodie hole in Louisiana.

They are the king of ducks and they are very good looking birds. I mean that'd look damn good on my wall.

What makes them king? I guess what I'm wondering is what makes them special? Do they come in in huge flocks? Are the a large duck? Do they do something special when they are decoying? Do they taste good?
Or do they just look good?

Adult males are 24" long and they dive up to 82 feet to feed.

My dream hunt would involve multiple species, such as waterfowl in the morning, upland mid day, fishing at night.

I've been playing with doing this on our North Dakota trip. Late October should be about prime to slam walleyes in the river at night.
To achieve success, one must possess dedication, passion and a boatload of decoys.

No way in hell I'd spend my dream hunt shooting at birds.

Alaska moose. Russian brown bear. Maybe Utah elk. Saber-tooth tiger.

I'd love to hunt where dall sheep or mountain goat live, but can't get over the fact that its just a damn sheep.

Ducks in the marsh in the morning with redfish from the blind. Load up the big boat and head to deep water.

I have friends who have hunted both species with bows. From their stories, I bet if you hunted them you wouldn't think of them as just a damn sheep any longer. Lol! I have a long bucket list of stuff I'd like to hunt with my longbow and I agree with Alaskan moose and Russian brown bear. Both would be awesome.

Lot of good hunts listed here. I got to thinking about it some more after I started this thread and when it comes to waterfowl, a Canadian hunt where the sky is filled with clouds of mallards and/or geese (any species of goose will do for me) is at the top of my list. Hope to make that happen next fall. After that, in no specific order...

A flooded timber mallard hunt where the birds just drop down vertical into the hole.

Louisiana duck hunt with the one and only legend himself, Rick Hall. Never met him but have been seeing his stuff online for several years now and you can just tell he would be a fun guy to spend a day in a duck blind with.

Argentina, if I ever strike it filthy rich. Wouldn't mind shooting doves down there too.

A good old fashioned duck hunt where you sit in a big floating blind with some good friends, smoke cigars, drink strong hot coffee and cook breakfast on an old gas camp stove. When I think of that type of hunt I always imagine a big lake in Tennessee somewhere for whatever reason.

One of them goose hunts in a field somewhere in Colorado where you have the mountains in the background and clouds of geese flying over for as far as the eye can see.

Le' me tells you 'bout dat... When I first moved down here I hunted a brackish Pecan Island marsh where reds sometimes tailed in the decoys and had a similar notion. Being an educated Yankee, however, I knew better than to try it from the blind and went down the way a bit before chunking a gold Johnson's spoon with a light spinning rig, shortly after which a stout red headed straight for the decoys and made a mess breaking off.
