Though I've seen one on a string here in the sunny South, the trick to killing them on the Ohio was to go when it was too damn miserable for anything else to still be hanging around. Kidded Titz about needing just seven or eight dozen more on another board, but I don't know that I ever saw even a dozen in one place.

Dad said the same thing, GEs and Bluebills show up when its too cold and nasty for anything else.

This gets harder with every step. I thought they would end up a lot nicer when I had them carved in foam, but the burlap/mastic proved a hard bitch to tame.
Anyhow the first three are painted black and waiting for accent colors.

What was your process for the mastic and burlap?

1)Thin layer of mastic (so thin it's not complete coverage... Just enough to make tacky).
2) burlap
3) thin layer of mastic (complete coverage, but leaving burlap still visible)
4) brush smooth with wet brush
5) let dry for 24 hours plus
6) thin layer of mastic
7) brush smooth with wet brush
8) let dry for 24 hours
9) sand very smooth
10) thin layer of mastic
11) brush smooth with wet brush
12) let dry 24 hours
13) sand very smooth
No mater what I do there are divots/voids in the mastic after sanding.

Good process, sounds like somewhere in there bubbles are being made. I did a few foamers and used the same process. My drying was a bit longer because of temps. Had a few bubbles here and there.

Make templates. If you are planning on doing a bunch that is. I'm guessing these are gunning birds, so templates with spray paints work good enough.

Here's the first five. I'll probably make another 7 to make an even dozen and them I'm done. It's a lot of work and nearly as expensive as buying froamers. Spill probably go back to buying them.

I've got plenty of foam still laying around so I figured I'd try a bufflehead. Making the head myself this time, will attach the bill later.
