First attempt at a wood head
Posted: Wed Feb 26, 2014 6:44 pmSo, I've been doing exactly NOTHING for three weeks since I had shoulder surgery. Couldn't stand it anymore so I spent a couple hours in the shop this afternoon. I wanted to do something with decoys, but knew I wouldn't be able to work for long, nor could I do any lifting or stretching, so I decided to try and carve my first ever wooden duck head. Figured I could work my arm close to my body and not hurt anything. I wanted a head for my first cork decoy (coming soon), and that's going to be a ringneck, so I made a stab at carving his head. Here's what I came up with before my shoulder started screaming at me. When I got to the base of the neck I discovered a crack I'll have to fix, but that's no big deal. Head is carved out of sugar pine. Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a start.
