Sir Smew on the bench

Postby RickC » Sun Jun 29, 2014 10:22 am

Got a bit done on the traveler after carving up 4 heads the last one didn't get thrown in the burn pile.
Now if I can just find the damn eyes I can set them, hollow him out, laminate, sand, seal and paint.

It's a lot smaller than I thought they were about the size of a hooded merganser. This cedar is pretty light also, I could see a rig of it in the future.

That's pretty sweet, Rick!

A little bit further along. Got the Smew and a hooded merganser hollowed, glued together, resanded and just sealed them both up with a 2 part marine epoxy.
I'm going to let them both cure for a few days then a light sanding and base coat both and start painting with Old Holland oils. Another first, oils!

I'd like one just epoxied up with no paint!
Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

They can look pretty cool just sealed up like that. There's a class for birds and fish done that way at some shows. I'd like to do one out of something like bocote or maybe snakewood.

I checked on enough snakewood for a call, that stuff is spendy.

Oh yeah, very pricey and I dont even wanna know what a block the size needed for a bird would cost.

You wouldn't want to let it go, that's for sure.
