Painted some dekes

Postby gila-river » Fri Jul 18, 2014 11:18 pm

I have noticed a big influx of Redheads the past few years and had some old mallard decoys I decided to convert. Here is what I got :

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1405743319.073677.jpg

I have no idea what order tap atalk put the pics in but I started with a mallard hen. All paint except bill and eyes is a rattle can job so it is far from perfect. I still think it's good enough to fool some divers. At the very least it adds some color to the spread.

Looks good. Get some yellow finger nail polish for the eyes. The ducks won't care, but you don't want to look like a rookie!

I did the same with some old Flambeaus, I used red primer and still killed birds, redheads aren't much smarter than spoonies. Those will work great.

The red primer would give a nice flat finish I bet.

Nothing wrong with that, by the time they get close enough to be a critic they should be splashed.

Think Jarbo meant to say "redheads aren't nearly as smart as spoonies," but while your son appears to have some reservation, I agree that those will do fine.

Send me your address and I will send you some decoys that you can paint for me  Those look really great! Wish I had the patience to do that.

If you're serious Ron send them over. I wouldn't mind some more practice. You'll just have to take me out for a hunt at the party blind should I ever find myself over in Texas.

Practice goes a long way with this decoy painting deal. The next three came out loads better than the first:

Especially happy with how the bills and eyes came out. Either way I've got 5 more red heads in my spread this year than I had last year.

And @Feelingfowl good call on the nail polish. I used it for the black on the eye and it came out great.

I did a few not too long ago. The red is red oxide. Still not happy with them (too dark on the back) so I haven't posted until now. Need to hook up the airbrush...

The deke on the right looks like he just underwent a prostate exam.

I'm not very talented with a rattle can. Much better (still not good) with an airbrush...

These mallards were airbrushed.
