Been transcribing logs and just ran across this shot I took a few years back of friends, Duke and David:

Pretty sure that was Duke's last full season in our marsh.

Yes. Now using the little mudboat in the stall next to my Go-devil.

The image of David in a pirogue is not a pretty one... They're not made for big men with bad knees.

Made me think of an old photo someone gave me of Obrey Trahan, one of the old time great guides in our area:
Image

Folks say Obrey wasn't afraid of a duck call or hunter. If he could see it, he hailed it. And if his hunters couldn't hit what he called, he wasn't shy about pointing that out. Wish I'd known him.

FS, can you believe that was taken in what my pothole was at the time? Things change.

I suck in a canoe, I am sure me in a perow is a disaster. Thank god for my refuge runner.

What I was thinking. His tune seemed to change rather quickly on the seagull when we hit the boat house. Would imagine he would be a good guy to share a blind with.

Hmm, sounds familiar. Haha

Did he have a regiment of grinding it out as you do now? Looks a good bit larger then.

Much of our coastal fresh marsh tends to close in between fires and hurricane salt surges that reopen it some, but I don't know how much attention Obrey devoted to keeping the pond open. Folks who hunted with him in their youth tell me the pond was two or three times bigger, but a lot of things seemed bigger when we were kids. Only know for certain that after he left it maybe thirty(?) years ago, it fell off the map and went from being a top blind to an extra blind for overflow hunters that outfit seldom had and was sorely neglected.

By the time I saw it, the east flotant "bank" was nearly even with the dog stand, and I spent much of my first Summer there mucking it out with a potato hoe and hauling the spoil off to Rick's Mountain in the marsh. Folks thought it a fool's errand, but no one bitched about me taking one the "better" blinds, and it's worked out pretty well.

Well, this was by far our worst season there, so I'm sure hoping it was an anomaly, rather than trend.

Seemed to be that way for most everyone. Our numbers were a fraction of what they have been in every previous year. Hoping for better this year to keep this guy from changing teams on me.

They're posted on what's likely a dying waterfowl site unrelated to the outfit I work for. Was once a neat one, but suffered long periods of downtime that pretty well killed it.

It was an offshoot of waterfowler.com, which was a good one until the owners tried making it a paid membership and sent most of its more interesting contributors off on their own. Would be hard to believe now how active that place once was before hosting miseries shut it down with repeated and sometimes long interruptions of availability for "improvements" that weren't.

I took this with my Iphone yesterday. A local guy who sells live minnows to our marina with his one year old, 130 pound "Tank".
I told him if his boat broke down the dog could probably tow him home.
