One word. Mallards
Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

It was my idea to hide in front of the log. Shooting from behind it was a PITA. Steep banks that were slick.
Sometimes doing it backwards works better.

Look up "il north zone duck hunting opener" on YouTube.

The ones I hunt after Christmas are very nervous and have been shot at since September or so.

It wasn't like we were sitting in the middle of the river.

Overhang from tress kept us from getting busted from above, and the fallen trees behind us gave great contrast.

Don't move and you're golden...

Once (in the 1900's)
I jumped some ducks off a borrow pit. Sat down on the bank and waited, hoping they'd come back. Shot two when I jumped em.
So I waited in a blizzard in the snow wearing my green army camo. No cover at all. Was still and guess what?
Them ducks, about 300 mallards, came back and landed at my feet about ten yards away so I picked out a drake and shot, missed, and hit three hens (one shot) that I didn't even notice. Was so focused on that drake.

Ok, who can count and add?

Point of this story is be still. Camo is over rated.

AB, when I lived in Yankee Land, I had good luck jumping birds off favored water and killing some on their return, but even as a young gun, I quickly figured out that they weren't coming back if I shot when they jumped.

It was a blizzard. They had nowhere else to go.
The borrow pit was special in that it had extremely high and steep banks. In blizzards waterfowl goes there in huge numbers because it's sheltered.
If I had stayed I think I could have shot em again.
Hard to believe. Huh?

At this stage of our game, most "Spring training" revolves around conditioning. We'll do a little of this or that retrieving work to keep the wheels fairly tight, but most of the focus is just on seeing that the coyote goes into his mid Summer lay-off fit as can be, so he'll be ready for the September teal that come soon after. Feel blessed that he's an endorphin junky who'll push through all manner of misery largely just for the pleasure of doing so.

Lord knows what he's after, sometimes it's a fish, sometimes one of these:

I'm just glad he likes to work himself and my lazy self can just tag along for the hike. Really glad it's gotten warm enough he'll spend most of a three or four mile loop swimming or pushing through driving water like that, as he can be pretty hard on the birds when not so occupied:

Mrs. Flightstopper said he looks like he's earned a milkbone. Granted as you know her definition of 'earned' goes no farther than breathing in most cases. Cool pics Rick.

Might not want to tell her he's been off the Milkbones since the last of her box. Not quite cold turkey, I suppose, as the ones the bank gals give him go into that day's supper bowl.
