If a guy were to drive 27 hours west and freelance northern California, what are the chances of bagging all 3 of the teal species? We get GWT and BWT here, but they are quite dull and brown. Cinnamon Teal are void of the central ND prairies as well. I'm looking for some birds for the wall. Taxidermy quality is not needed, just a good representation of the species.

Blue wings are highly uncommon here. I've seen one in 17 years and it was in a refuge closed zone. Every year a few are killed in central California but its very few. Cinnamon's and green wings are almost a sure thing depending on time of year and location.

I want a cinnamon for my wall. I've shot plenty. Just never had one done. Can you arrange that?

I've heard that. I'll refer myself to the Guide to Hunting the California Refuge System for further assistance

That would be your best bet! All I do is stare at empty sky's all season from my perfectly manicured blind. He however takes solace in the fact he has a full freezer.

Sucks being a mortal in the presence of god.

So from my understanding, the refuges are on a draw system correct? What if you don't draw for a spot on that day? Is it tough titty and you go back to bed or are there free roam spots as well? I want to do this sometime in 2014-2015.

It's a complicated process but you can apply for reservations. If you don't draw a reservation you play the lottery. If you don't draw a low number in the lotto show up at 1030 and hope to hunt the afternoon.

Will do. I can even do a swap hunt. Spring snows are a ton of fun. Drink a lot of beer at night and shoot lots of birds during the day. Repeat that untill you can't stand it anymore.

It wears on you after awhile, 2am wake ups and 3 hours of setting decoys in ankle deep mud that seems to have a life mission to keep you from moving forward. But electronic callers, no limits and un-plugged guns can make up for that quickly.

Most refuges and clubs down in the grass lands kill the crap out of teal. Best place I know of to get the three of a kind around here.

Post up a reminder when it gets closer to the WCH, and I will see what I can do. Some years we get them in pretty thick.
