Never seen a hen with green in her head like this kinda neat..

Nice hunt Bowjoe! Looks to me like the hen you killed is actually a drake. A cross between a mottle and mallard or black and mallard. Another indication besides the green on the head, is the color of the bill. I shot one years ago that was very similar in markings. Congrats on a fine hunt

That's because it's a drake.
Look at the bill...if its yellow it's a drake, if it's orange it's a hen.
It also looks to be a black/mallard cross, but can't really tell from the pics. Cool bird.

It's my understanding that old hens lacking estrogen start taking on those male characteristics. Would probably need to spread it's little legs apart and check the cloaca for pecker or clit to be certain of its sex.

Yes, but to my knowledge their bills will still remain orange. And from the looks of that last picture it's definitely a black duck with a little mallard mixed in.

The hen can take on the drake colors in feathers but never in the bill.

Nice hybrid bowjoe! They are somewhat common around here, I've shot three in my 14 years waterfowling, but never one with green on the head.
