Serious pintail question

I shot this pintail this afternoon, everything about it says hen to me except the back half of each side of its head has the chocolate colored patch and only a partial white stripe. It seems late in the season to have an immature drake and it also is odd that the brown stops at such a defined line rather than fading in. Also its tough to see in the pics but the wing has the dull coloration of a hen.
Its not like its a wall-worthy bird, just curious

I'd go with Drake. We shot a juvie greater billed mallard here this morning. Maybe one of the late hatch birds?

But with the spoons its easy to tell - any black speckles on the bill at all, usually near the corner of the mouth, and its a hen. Count on it. Same with gaddys.

That's strange. But it looks like an immature drake.

Hmm, I've just never seen a hen with a head/ neck like that. You clearly know more than me though. To me they all shoot and eat the same so just never put too much thought into it.

Some old guy at the refuge check station told me that once.

We shot this green wing on our road trip a month ago. It had this white ring around its neck. I thought it was odd.

There wasn't speckles on the bill of this bird, was there? Because with the bill turning dark that one looks like a young drake.

We said juvie Drake and can't recall any speckle on the bill.

It'll be an assafact for sure. Something along the lines of how they bypass the standard flyway and winter in Japan by way of a pitstop in Hawaii or some bullshit.

Late Spring has us now seeing a good many drakes still sporting their plain brown go-to-wally-world duds, including pintails.

It is not a mallard hen so why does it even matter if it is a drake or not?

A pintail is a pintail and you need not be concerned about which sex it is.
Tell Mr. Greenjeans that Betty said...fuck the queen.
