Need help jerking it

Postby gila-river » Mon Jul 28, 2014 7:11 pm

I have never used a Jerk string in my spread. Wanting to build one this year. I don't wanna pay 40 bucks for one I think I can build and there are roughly 2.7million plans online for budding them online. Any advice or anything that works especially well for any of you? I usually hunting 2-4' of water with little to no current and a sandy bottom. Thanks in advance for any tips.

Just get a small folding kayak anchor, swivel clips, string and a section of bungee. What helps the most is something good to roll it around. Pretty stair forward

If your hunting the same spot all the time I like the ones built out of a large disk blade with an eye bolt through it.

I like black surgical tubing instead of bungee. A 5lb float tube anchor holds good for deeper water and/or rocky bottom. Always anchor a decoy to it, as well, so you don't have to try and pull it up with the tubing. In shallower water with soft bottom I prefer anchoring to a light garden stake, as it's less weight to carry. Tie off to a stainless steel ring and slide over the stake, it will sink the tubing, which tends to float.

I use decoy line for string. I tie loops at 6' intervals and attach/remove large snap swivels as needed for given situations. Extra snap swivels live on my jacket zipper pull so I always have a couple handy. A better solution might be clips, so that you don't have unused loops picking up or hanging up on debris. It's not a huge issue, but sometimes it bugs me.

If you can figure out a decent way to reel the line onto a spool, rather than wrap it with your hand, you will save yourself a lot of headache caused by twisted line. I need to figure this out before the new season starts.

I know I've had mine for a few years but only paid 28 bucks for the rigem right. Comes ready to go in a nice little carry bag that will fit in your pocket. The folding anchor works good in any pond too.
And like banknote said, attach a decoy directly to the anchor with a clip, that way you can pull it out of the mud without worry of breaking the bungee and losing the anchor (most expensive part).

I'm going to have to attach a line to the anchor of mine for a decoy. I've thought about that too pulling up on the bungee.

And seriously, the rig-em-right kits are cheap enough to not bother trying to make your own

Make it detachable so the anchor can still go in the bag. I did it because I've had my anchor get buried in the weeds and muck and i thought i was going to bust the bungee.

Forget those rigem right/ academy fools gila. Build your own. You'll get a kick outta it. Follow banknotes plans. Although I used large black string for mine, rather than decoy line, but either will work. And the surgical tubing is a must. Pass on the bungee

If you want to make it, go for it. I was just pointing it that $40 or $28 for a jerk rig is ridiculous when you can get it for $15.

Good luck, Gila!

Right on, have fun. I like rigging up my own gear. Beats watching TV. Let me know if you figure out a good reel for it.

One thing I left out, I loop the weight end of the tubing onto a large carabiner, which then can be hooked to the weight or around the stake, in which case it serves to sink the tubing, as well.

Tubing sucks, it rots and doesn't last long. Go to a rock climb in store and get yourself some 1/8" shock cord.

I have 3 seasons on mine and it's still going strong, though I haven't checked it after half a hot summer in the shed.

They sell it around here by the foot at tackle shops. I don't recall the price, but 10' of it doesn't cost much.

I have a 1x6 piece of pine that's about 15" long with a v on each end with a nail pounded in the edge grain on each end. Hook the end that he's to the boat to one nail. Wrap it around the board then stretch the bungee end to either nail so it's tight but not stretching it. Keeps the line all neat and goes easy in the boat or jet sled.

The ones that work like a reel? Either way, kind of big, aren't they? I want something I can throw in a pack/blind bag. I was thinking an ice fishing reel might work.

I made mine with shock cord too. Here I can buy it at the marine supply store. I use #36 tarred line as my jerk cord but, any thick decoy cordage (other than tangle free style) will work. I've seen a lot of guys using the cheap GHG decoy cord that comes on a spool and they keep it on the spool they buy it on. That seems like a good enough system and, you can hold the spool like a handle.
I use a 5# pyramid for the weight. It works anywhere.

And they are damn good. Got a rig em right last year at a garage sale and it looks almost identical to academy's.

Ever notice how every block on the line moves the same way when you jerk and release the chord? Reminds me of those old Motown r&b dancing music groups. We called our jerk line "the Jackson five".
