Hen with green head?!?

Postby IndianaMallard64 » Mon Oct 26, 2015 9:24 am

Hi everyone,

I just got back my mallard mounts from my taxidermist. In the light yesterday I noticed that the hen has some green feathers on its head? Someone please explain. Thanks!

The Caitlyn Jenner of ducks.

I've seen some crosses that result in greenish headed hens but I've never seen one like that.

Also when they get older some start to get green but that doesn't seen to apply here either.

Why not? Strikes me as an old gal who forgot to take her estrogen supplement.

If I had to guess I would say that the hen had an hormonal imbalance.

Hen looked young to me by the fuzzy picture on my phone. Pic wouldn't load. But the reduction in estrogen levels is probably the most likely cause cause.

Almost looks like the green on the hen's head is a reflection from the greenhead sitting next to it........... :o

While I was in large part just being a smartass, did it have that before you sent it to the taxidermist?

Does he use some green to enhance or touch up, even if he doesn't tell you he does, and got some on the hen? Do they treat or clean the feathers so they look better and it changed the color a bit?

Granted it is probably a hen that has hormonal issues, but I'd be surprised if you didn't notice before hand since I figure you looked them over quite a bit before you decided these are the ones to send to the taxidermist.

I remember seeing it when I picked out this hen but I guess it was kinda dirty so I didn't think it was the actual feathers, my first thought was that it was paint or something but when you look closely they have a shiny sort of tint like the drakes head feathers

I agree. That is a unique and different mount likely hard to beat. You didn't notice you shot two greenheads?

The green screen in the shot has nothing to do with green light reflecting off the ducks head in that picture. @@@@@

You posted two pictures. Look real close at the second one and you'll see a green light. Green light reflects green and I think that's where the green tint on the hen's head comes from. Trick photography.
