15 year retirement

Thank you to all the service members past and present whether it be military, police, fire, or other.

This is amazingly true, and shouldn't be discounted. I used to think the bullshit was deep in the Army, but really, corporate America makes the military look like a well-oiled machine. While the bullshit may be a different flavor, I assure you it is every bit as deep in the civilian world.

I bet that's true. I guess I really just needed to vent. I went out today and put the hurt down on some geese as well and I feel remarkably better.

The key difference is that you can choose to deal with it or not in the civilian world.
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

No. You can choose WHERE you want to deal with it, but it is always there in some shape or form.

There are varying degrees of course. And sometimes a change of bullshit style makes it seem more tolerable. For a while.

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without that law is both. For a wounded man shall say to his assailant, "If I live, I will kill you. If I die, you are forgiven." Such is the rule of honor.

Exactly. The problem is, you can't bitch about it, nobody is there to care.

Not true at all. I live both worlds and I'll take the military bullshit any day over the real world bullshit.

Mypers, which is the governing authority for this program is stating that it will just be like the 20 year retirement system that is in place currently. The only difference will be that instead of a 50% pension, I will only get 37.5%. Which is going to be only a difference of around $400 dollars for me. Only 4 years and 10 months to go.

You can receive bonuses up until your 20 year mark. After that you don't receive them.

I am not sure if I could punch out at 15 and collect the bonus. I think those that take that bonus have to do the full 20 or risk the chance of having to pay back the bonus or at least parts of it. But, I have also heard of some people getting a waiver stating that they did not have to repay the bonus. Wouldn't hurt to ask though when the time comes.

Eric are you talking about career field bonuses or the redux that gets offered to every service member at their 15 year mark? I think AK is talking about the redux in that article he posted.

Yeah, I would take any bonus you can. Even if you have to pay it back, free interest. The guys that took the bonus were the smart ones in this case.

Actually this so called bonus is really not that great REDUX, at 15 years you can choose to take the bonus which enables you to stay till 20 at 40% retirement or go all the way to 30 years to get your 50 % retirement. I've seen to many people pizz their bonus away and then get out at 20 with only 40 %.

oh and that 30 grand is about 21K after 28% tax is taken out. Not worth it IMO

The financial advisers on base here even said taking the redux is a bad idea. The only way according to them, for it to be a good idea is if you invested it aggressively and hoped to god you didn't lose your ass.

If the CG was offering early outs right now I would take it in a heart beat. Use my GI bill to go to school and float myself for another 4 years while getting a degree and figure it out from there.

Hopefully the CG will ask for some soon.

The military is fucking awesome when you're young and don't want to settle down. When you get old enough and the desire to own some land, raise a family and just stay in one spot kicks in it'll suck.
