Awesome thread. Thanks for sharing.

Those are some cool images Rick, are those hand drawn? Certainly they didn't have cameras back then did they?

What's with the guys hanging from a rope?

My first though was parachute, but it doesn't look like that's the case...

That works. Looks like the tail of a helicopter in there.

Here's the picture that precedes the one you're talking about. It was a dead gook getting hauled out of our camp by a "Loach" helicopter.

While looking for that "Loach" photo, found this one but I have to tell the story behind it for it to mean anything.
My two Montagnard scouts and I had been humping the boonies for a week or so and had run out of food a couple of days earlier.
We were hungry and tired and got near the highway so I radioed this bridge/checkpoint and asked them if we could come in to get some sleep and maybe grub some chow.
They were very accomodating and we were enjoying a visit when some small arms fire broke out. There was an APC and a bunker at each side of the bridge that don't show in picture. The guy sitting down had just got shot in the leg by a sniper and the Armored personnell carriers were throwing up a wall of lead in the snipers direction. You can see that the guys with plenty of time in country just walking around like it's nothing and the obviously fresh meat guys ducking and flinching. I was taking a picture of the guy who got shot and he was cursing at me for taking it which made me laugh..... which made him curse at me even more. I still took it though.
The shooting was all over in a few minutes and I walked out to help them put a tourniquet on the guy's leg and he was fine. Probably got some time off out of the deal.

They guy leaning on the bridge with the cigarette in his mouth cracks me up. Very cool as always Rick.

Very interesting stuff Rick.

Looks like you missed a few meals over there. No wonder they couldn't hit you.

And, thank you for doing it.

You,ve got that right Bill. When I arrived there I weighed 190 and had very little body fat when I came home....weighed 160. Malaria, dysentery, humping the jungle in 100 degree weather with 60 pounds of gear, missing quite a few meals and sleeping an average of 3-4 hours a day takes it's toll after a while. There were times that we went 3-4 days without eating. Didn't take long to get right back to 190 once the home cooking kicked in though.
Most guys in my outfit went through the same weight loss as me so it wasn't unusual.
