Made the best of it

Postby Baysider » Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:14 pm

We started out Saturday morning at the boat ramp near my house. My motor which had been running great wouldnt start. My buddy went home and got his boat and my son and I met him out on the highway. We went over to the seaside and hit the water around 7:30. Way late but we figured we could at least shoot some dippers. We ended up with two black ducks and 10 dippers for a limit.
We went home and I messed with the motor with little improvement. I think a coil has gone bad. I had some friends from the middle of VA show up to go seaduck hunting. I called them to see where they were and they had been caught in the fog on the bay and didnt even leave the mouth of the creek. I told them to come and get me and I would get us out to where the birds would be. We set out and didnt leave the mouth of the creek into open water far before we started to see scoter and old squaw infront of the boat. We bumped a raft of birds up and got our long lines set. The fog lifted a little and the birds would fly. Then it would get so thick we couldnt see the end of the spread. Then lighten up and we would kill birds. We gave up around 4 after killing 4 old squaw and 12 scoter. I managed a drake squaw, my first, a drake scoter and two hens. So after all the trouble and fog I ended up with 10 birds for the day but certainly had to work for them.

I do, but it's probably not fit for posting, even here.

Around here, if you shoot a diver, your hunting partners will never let you hear the end of it....its the equivelant of taking a fat girl home from the bar.

If may feel good for a moment, but its wrought with regret forever.

If it werent for the dippers I would have gotten bored enough to stop hunting. The past two years have been terrible. Not to mention the way they decoy and the fast pace of hunting them is great for keeping kids interested.

I am not knocking u fellas for it. There is a wide variation within the us in regards to waterfowl hunting. Here in KS we don't have great numbers of divers. We have puddle ducks and geese. If I lived near big water I think I would be into it myself.

Thank God they raised the limit on bills or it would have been a slim take in lots of spots
