Teal Season

Teal Season

Postby Flightstopper » Sun Sep 14, 2014 10:45 am

I sat out the openeing day due to thunderstorms in the area and just let evey one else fight it out. Made it out today and was pleasantly suprised with what we saw. Seeing no need to reinvent the wheel I will simply follow Rick's template as well.

Date: 9/14

Time: Morning

Location: Q Pits

Cloud Cover: Heavy

Wind Direction and Velocity: Light Northeast

Temperature: 65

Barometer: 30.22 rising

Moon phase: Half waning

Special Notes: First hunt of the year

Waterfowl Activity: Flights ended early but many birds working

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Well, call helped work them to the blocks early on with few passes.

Hunters: Brother in law (Aaron) First duck hunt ever

Guns: Silver and 870 both IC choke and HG load with 3 shot

Malfunctions: Suprisingly none for the first hunt

Dog(s): Milo, nearing 4 years old, made short work of marks. One bird fell far in water and wind pushed out to around 50 yards. Took a couple tries for him to take the cast back far enough but once he did made a line straight for it. Much improved from last season when there wern't many birds to leave an impression on him of how to handle being in the field.

Special Equipment: Two dove mojo, 1 1/2 dozen decoys mix species

Kudos: Aaron did well knocking down his share of birds and is now ate up with it.

Curses: Took the first volley to find our shots but fell into place shortly after. As always, should have still been better.

Birds By Species: 5 BWT

Photo Ops: Didn't have the presence of mind to pull the camra out of my pocket with the excitement of having a better hunt than expected. Snapped a couple when all said and done.

Heading in, after today's hunt a full arsenal of waders, bag etc ect will be bought Tuesday. One hunt is all it took...

Thanks again for the log section Olly. Look forward to reading everyone's hunts as well as looking back in the spring.

Good deal flight.

Giving them a few days for new to show and those to stick. Was a excellent start to season.

Date: 9/14

Time: Morning

Location: Q Pits

Cloud Cover: Thick fog that burned off with first daylight, clear after

Wind Direction and Velocity: Nothing

Temperature: 70

Barometer: 30.06 rising

Moon phase: Quarter waxing

Special Notes: Last day of early teal, only managed to hunt twice but didn't seem to miss out on much for birds. Makes 7 BWT for the early season.

Waterfowl Activity: Slow

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Had a few flocks break to call only to fall back into the group and never look back.

Hunters: Jack

Guns: Silver, HG 3 shot load

Malfunctions: Cleaned gun before hunt and didn't have it together quite right allowing boltface to close, quick fix before sunrise. Had a shell swell in the chamber that would not eject and had to break down gun to remove. Not too happy with this load and had a couple crimps fall out while sitting in the bag. Perform well but about every other aspect is a pain.

Dog(s): Milo, did well chasing down a clipped dove that had enough to fly off once Milo was on top of it. Two easy retireves on teal, one slightly crippled.

Special Equipment: 18 mixed decoys and one dove mojo and a non-functional baby mojo.

Kudos: Good to be back out with Jack and the two that came in stayed. New boat rides great with the 15 horse on it and can't wait to fit the jet pump to it.

Curses: Mojo was dead after shwoing that it was trying to take a charge the day before.

Birds By Species: 2 BWT

Photo Ops:
Best photo I managed to catch of the spot.
