10/17
Me and my dad went out to the bay this morning.
Weather was good with a 10-15mph S wind. Overcast with thread of rain, but never did. We put out 5doz puddle ducks, 8 geese, and 6 Bluebills. The bills went straight off the end of the point 25 yards from shore, geese just around the downwind side of the point, and puddlers went further around the point to the calm side.
2 min to LST we had 2 teal and a mallard land in goose decoys then take right back off. Shortly after 3 redheads landed with the bills and we jumped them and got 1. Then it was quiet until about 9am when 2 wigeon came right over the pocket. I killed one and my dad whiffed. Not long after, 2 separate single pinners came right into the pocket about 5min apart and my dad killed the drake, then I killed the hen. I was working some mallards that peeled off and headed for the refuge. Some point during that time 5 GW teal landed in the goose decoys that we didn't see and decided to jump. I got one but they were too far away by the time my dad got up.
At that point, all the ducks were working the goose end of the spread, so we decided to pull the boat further around the point to square the shots up better.
As I was getting back in the boat, some more wigeon worked the spread and one got a little to close and my dad folded it up. Then a can locked into the bills and my dad folded that one too.
By now it's about 1030. It slowed for a bit and we decided we were going to call it a day around 1100 to get home in time to get up north to deer hunt. 1055 rolls around and a lone wigeon locks in and we put it on the water. Decided to wait until 1130 and again 1128 and in comes a pair of wigeon and we only killed one. While I was climbing in the boat my dad says there are mallards locked in. All but one peeled off and he killed her right in the hole. Decided to stay till noon.
1155 comes and here comes a lone teal straight at us. Come into about 10 yards and took a full load of steel to the face.
Decided to stay and try for our limit as now it was too late to get out for deer hunting now. About 1 and some mallards work but peeled off and landed with some swans 200 yards away. 2 rolls around and we decide it was time to quit. Start picking stuff up in the boat and turn to look to see 5 wigeon just above the decoys. I quick grabbed my gun and finished off our limit with a beautiful drake that is probably going on the wall.

Sweet! I mostly get wood ducks and a few mallard. Hoping to bag a pintail on the few days they come through!

Reads like you should have decided to quit every fifteen minutes or so, could have filled out, had a leisurely lunch and made it to the deer stands.

That's what we were saying. It was like clockwork EVERY time. When the last ones came in and we couldn't believe it. Someone up stairs wanted to keep us on the water all day I guess

That was the first drake pin killed as well as the first canvasback on a hunt I was on. Not a bad day at all.

Cool! A day of "firsts"!

For some reason, I feel like this is going to be a good year for Pins. We don't normally get a lot of them either, but I've seen a bunch of them this year. Darn near every teal hunt!

Congrats on a great day!

We have 3 so far this year. I think I got 2 total last year. Actually outnumber the 2 whole mallards we killed so far this year.
Widgets are leading our bag right now with 6 in the bag. 3 pins, 1 black, 3 GW teal, 2 mallards, 3 redheads, and 1 canvasback.

And thanks! It was a good time. I always like getting my dad on birds. He's a die hard deer hunter, so it's not easy to get him out. But he got a nice buck last week, so he has a little more leeway.

Mentioning black ducks I believe this is one we shot in our field last year. Between our field and a buddies we've killed over 3000 ducks the last 6 or 7 years and this is only the second one. Please corect me if this not a black duck.

Wasn't trying to hijack your thread nuff, sorry about that. You guys had a great day and I remember days like the one you described much more vividly than the limits in a hour.

Perhaps the Chamber of Commerce birds missed a time change. Folks talk about bathroom breaks. lighting cigars or biting into a Moon Pie making birds fly, but the most reliable way I've found is packing up and heading out. Seems like that invariably draws "Chamber of Commerce birds" for a flyby to say, "Y'all come back."

Reading that made me pretty envious nuff. Sounds like a good time. Got quite a while until we open up here. Weekend before thanksgiving. The anticipation is killing me. 5-6 weeks is a long time to wait but not very long to get everything ready.

Haha. It was a good time.
I know what you mean. Seemed like forever away, then all of a sudden it was day before opener and I had a lot to do still.

10/30 was my next hunt worth talking about. I went solo to one of the managed areas and got a first draw. Weather was sunny and calm. Very few birds it the air, but I managed to get 2 greenheads and a teal. Should of had my 4 mallards, but missed a single and should of tripled on the first group I got the 2 out of.

10/31
Had plans to hunt the bay, but with a couple buddies canceling and the crazy weather predicted I decided to hit the same managed area as the day before with 2 other guys. We hunted the afternoon and got drawn 37th of 85 parties. Didn't get a great spot, but with the predicted 30+mph N winds and snow/rain mix I know there would be a lot of ducks around. We had birds working the zone while we were still putting out decoys. From 1-6:30 it was nonstop birds in the air, but it was tough to get them close with the wind. We ended up with 9 mallards and a wigeon, so it turned out to be a pretty good day.

Over 600 birds were shot on the WMA I hunted Friday. On Thursday, the season total was a little over 4k.
