Youth hunt

Postby NuffDaddy » Sat Sep 13, 2014 2:50 pm

Went out to a field this morning for some geese and found out we had a 14 year old kid along to shoot some ducks and this field had been holing several hundred mallards as well as a hundred or so geese.
The weather was perfect with a light drizzle, 10-15mph NE wind, and about 45*.
About a half hour after LST the ducks started pouring in in massive flocks. Some had more than 100 birds. We finished about 5 flocks, a pair, and a single right in the young kids face. He killed the single and one from the pair, but the flocks got the best if him, and he only got one out of the big flocks. Went through a box of shells before the ducks slowed down and the geese started coming. We ended the day with 3 mallards and 7 geese.

Very nice.

Unbelievable for early season in michigan. I've never had anything like it happen to me before. I know the gopro adds yards so it's hard to tell, but the lead birds in the flock be like 15 yards when he popped up. If only that would happen in the regular season.

Went back to the same field today. No geese really wanted to work, but that was expected since we busted them up yesterday. The duck show was amazing again. Flocks were smaller but probably 2x as many flocks. They were a little harder to finish with the calm sunny weather and most had probably been shot at yesterday. We finished 4 flocks and got the kid some shooting again. He got one and sailed another that made it to the beans and unfortunately couldn't find. We had a flock of close to 100 land behind us about 75yards so we put the belly stalk on them, but got busted quick in the disked up wheat field and they took off.
