Opening weekend

Opening weekend

Postby NuffDaddy » Thu Oct 09, 2014 9:55 pm

Season opens up in 2 days!! Heading out tomorrow to scout for some birds. Saturday I'm tagging along on a open water layout hunt. Never done that before so it will be an experience. It will be nice to be away from the opening day crowds as well. Sunday I'll be hitting the shoreline for some mallards.
Weather is looking better than bad, but not great. Light wind, and mostly sunny...but support to be close to freezing the next 3 nights, so that is better than nothing.

Apparently the geese are here in full swing because there was a raft of about 500 2 miles off shore with small flocks scattered along the shore for about 3 miles. And flocks flying everywhere. Gonna be a lot of dead geese this weekend I think.
Here is a pic of the refuge inland a bit.

Super slow. Birds were acting like 2nd week stale birds. It was sunny and calm which was less than ideal for a layout hunt. Had a few misses but nothing hit the water from the layout. Only duck we got was a hen mallard that decided to fly over the tender. It was still a cool experience hunting from a layout boat. Hope to do it again when the birds want to cooperate better.
Hitting the shore tomorrow to hopefully kill some mallards and geese.

Stick with it if you get the chance. Being in a layout when a big bunch of bills swarm in is like being in flooded timber with mallards dropping through the tops, something every waterfowler should experience at least once.

I will for sure if I get invited back out. The one bird that did come in was cool. Just bad shot.

We had a flock of 50 of them work us. 3 passes and one was about 15 yards over our head. Sounded like a jet going over. They swung around and dropped right into the pocket. I pulled up and "click"...didn't reload my gun after chasing the crippled pintail. My buddy folded his 2 in one shot. Both beautiful drakes. Those were actually the first redheads killed on a hunt I was on. I've yet to get one...Oh well.
