Today was the opener for early prairie chicken, the start of the upland season. Chose a 2,080 acre tract to hunt, with no idea where to start. After driving around a bit, picked an easy place to cross the fence with a good looking short grass hillside. Started off on what I expected to be a many many mile walk, just over 100 yards in Taz locks up, head held high and winding, typically of a prairie chicken point. @ more steps and the bird flushes towards me on the left, I connect with a 25 yard crosser, first bird down. Taz makes a good retrieve and I cast him back out. He makes it 40 yards and locks up again, I swing around to the left so I won't be shooting over Taz, chickens like to flush low. This bird was a little more jumpy, flushes and I drop it at 40 or so yards. Taz makes the retrieve and I have my 2 bird limit. 150 yards back to car for a few pics. Checked a few ponds hoping for some teal, all I found was a few dove, made for a few water retrieves.
