PRAIRIE CHICKEN

PRAIRIE CHICKEN

9/15/14

Today was the opener for early prairie chicken, the start of the upland season. Chose a 2,080 acre tract to hunt, with no idea where to start. After driving around a bit, picked an easy place to cross the fence with a good looking short grass hillside. Started off on what I expected to be a many many mile walk, just over 100 yards in Taz locks up, head held high and winding, typically of a prairie chicken point. @ more steps and the bird flushes towards me on the left, I connect with a 25 yard crosser, first bird down. Taz makes a good retrieve and I cast him back out. He makes it 40 yards and locks up again, I swing around to the left so I won't be shooting over Taz, chickens like to flush low. This bird was a little more jumpy, flushes and I drop it at 40 or so yards. Taz makes the retrieve and I have my 2 bird limit. 150 yards back to car for a few pics. Checked a few ponds hoping for some teal, all I found was a few dove, made for a few water retrieves.

Back at it this morning chasing chickens. Hunt was more of what I expected, first bird encounter was near 4 miles in, point in top pic. Birds were 50 yards in front of Taz and 40 yards in front of me, only got one shot off but put a bird down. Headed to the west where birds were headed, bout 2 miles later Taz locks up on a hillside with thicker grass, bird flushes to my right giving a 30 yard crosser, 2nd bird down. Unloaded the gun and strapped it into my vest and headed out on the 2.5 mile walk back to the car.

Had a friend from out of town wanting to shoot a chicken. Took him to my favorite field, put him on quite a few birds, but was unable to connect. Birds were not holding for a point and flushing wild.

Sharptails are fun, definitely different birds though. Ready to go back to MT for them and huns.

Huns are a neat bird. Have some in our valley. Never have targeted them though

Huns are the prairie bird that captured my fancy, but I suspect they're behind me, along with all urge to venture far for hunting, at this point.
