Goose Call

Postby huntntech » Tue Jun 26, 2012 7:00 pm

I was wondering what you guys would recommend for a good beginner goose call? I have goose hunted only a couple times the past couple years and would like to get into more. A couple of my hunting buddies all blow something different and the only thing I can get out of them is: " I don't know this is what I blow." I was just looking for a little advice from you guys. I don't mind spending the extra money for a good call to begin with instead of going cheap and trying to learn on a not so good of a call. (I'm not saying all cheap calls aren't any good, but I know some aren't.) thanks in advance for the help

Goose Call

Postby assateague » Tue Jun 26, 2012 9:06 pm

I've had high dollar and low dollar, but the best sounding, easiest to blow is a local one I recently stumbled across, Bottoms Up goose call (they only have one). Picked one up for $25 at Gander Mtn on a whim, but that thing is nice. I sold my GVCC PCS, because this $25 call sounds better and takes less air. Don't think they have a website, but you might want to keep your eyes open for one. I'd highly recommend it at this point.

The Southern Game Calls Sentinel is also a easy blowing and handling goose call.

Thanks for the different options. I will check into these calls you guys have mentioned. Assa, I definitely like the idea of a $25 call.

Assa I remember you mentioning this call before. I could not find anything on it. I tried looking at gander mountain website but they don't list it. I seen they have a facebook page according to google, but I don't have one. Are these made by a local guy, where they would only be sold in your area?

That's the only video I've ever found, too. They're not very good callers, but you can get a pretty good idea as to the sound of the call. I've never found a website or FB page, either. I suspect the G Mtn here carries them because they're only about 15 miles down the road.

If you want, I'll pick you one up and mail it to you. Keep it for a bit, and if you like it, you can pay me, if not just send it back. I want one as a backup, anyway, since I love the sound, but the molded nature doesn't inspire a lot of confidence if I drop it in the parking lot or slam my lanyard in the hatch of my Jeep.

I like the size of them. They sound like they can get pretty low too, which I like since all of my calls are pretty high pitched. How much do their calls run for? I don't have Facebook and I don't see a webpage.

They're $25 at Gander Mtn here.

That's exactly why I like them- they're really low, and you can get extremely goosy with them. The only drawback for me would be durability, and I haven't had mine long enough to tell. But considering I could have bought 6 of them for what my GVCC was, I'm ok with that at this point. Easy to blow, too. My 5 year old can do a pretty decent click.

Are they poly or acrylic?

I've shattered a few acrylic calls. I usually switch to wood when the temp drops below 20. However poly is pretty durable, moreso than acrylic..but I don't own any poly calls that I like the sound enough to hunt with.

AT, I wouldn't mind having one of those calls sent to me, like the idea of a lower pitched call. Can get you a check in the mail.

I would take one either way. My computer is effed up, won't play any sounds, barely works. Hasn't been the same since I got home one day and my nephew had 54 windows open on it.

This was the best I could do. Apparently, an iPhone doesn't have the best mic (not that I'm anywhere near a pro, anyway). I was about 10 yards away, and trying not to call towards one of the buildings. It's hard to tell how deep it is, but it's pretty low compared to others I've had. It actually stuck right in the middle, which probably won't be a problem hunting, since at most I cluck and comeback call, and that's about it, but it did concern me a little bit. It's not like it's 20 degrees out or something today, and if the tolerance is that tight, it may need some shaving. We'll see.

Anyway, take it for what it's worth. No way I'm filming myself blowing a goose call, so enjoy the footage of the tree.

I havent had much time to play with it yet, but its a decent call especially for the price. It does take a little more air volume than my Basin Waterfowl, I think due to the barrel being a little bigger. Definitely has a low sound to it. I will say I have more expensive calls that dont sound as good as this one.
