Goose contest

Postby aunt betty » Wed Apr 17, 2013 10:40 am

There is so much controversy over whether or not the "20-pound Canada goose" exists.
I say it does IN ILLINOIS. Someone in the Chicago area will shoot one. Maybe J. Foiles. ;)
There are many Giant Canada geese that literally range from Chicago to Effingham and that's about it.
They don't migrate per se...but move around to avoid the deep snow.
Decatur, Mattoon, and Champaign all have large local populations of these Giant geese.

The club I guided at near Canton, Illinois advertised that they regularly killed 20-pound Canada geese. Never weighed one but they ARE Giant geese.

We need to all pool together and get a prize. I can throw in a decoy or something for the first guy who can show a picture of a CANADA goose on a scale that weighs more than 18 pounds. It MIGHT be a while...There's a club that tried this but not on such a large scale as we can.

Anybody else in?

I'm in. Unfortunately, most of the geese I kill are residents in the early season, which don't get as big as the migrators.

I shot that goose a LONG time ago when I was in college. I think it was the largest one I ever shot. Could post lots of pics of dead geese. None like that one.

I'm in. I don't goose hunt...but I've killed a few that made their way over to me while I was duck hunting.
This was my first and biggest goose. I guess it was somewhere over 15#s

Fwiw, when the 20lb goose argument was raging on the fuge forum and many claimed to be killing them regularly, the fellow who makes Drop Zone decoys held a contest awarding a dozen of his finest customs, selling for around $1,000, to the first person to actually produce a Canada of just 18lbs. Several claimed things like coyotes eating their prize winner, but none could produce one. So the minimum weight was dropped first to 17lbs the next season, then to 16lbs the one after, and "Killed one, but..." excuses were all that came of it until the winning weight was reduced to 15lbs. That year the prize was finally awarded when someone finally killed one that went 15-something.

Any idea what part of the country? Because I know that around here, I've never seen (or heard of) one even close to that, and we get our fair share of Canadas along the Chesapeake.

That was the contest.

Both of my own monster among monster Canadas turned out somewhere around 13. (Perhaps on the under side of it, since I've let the figures fade with time.)

I don't recall where it was shot. Do, however, remember my early '80s Eastern Shore guides getting excited over "747s" the were huge compared to the Atlantic Coast migrants that were then their bread and butter but the norm for our Ohio Valley resident birds. Would think you now have a lot more resident giants, but I'm also thinking 15lbs is HUGE anywhere in the real world. 'Cept maybe old McDonald's farm.

I think our resident geese got the short end of the genetics stick. I often think they stayed here not because it was a good place to be, but because they forgot how to get home.

When I read this post, I was prepared to declare no geese ever get over 20 lbs. But before I shot my mouth off and cracked out this :tk:

I did some reading. DU and I think Wikipedia both claim that geese get over 20 lbs....I think we have some big ones here, but I have never seen anything close to 15lbs

The average goose around here seems to be quite a bit smaller than say 15 years ago, but who knows, I may be trippin balls.

If pet geese count, than they might get 20lbs. The biggest one I've ever seen was around 15lbs, it was huge and a pet.

I have spoken with a guy form Fergus Falls MN that held a goose contest for many years and he said they dont make them that big. I shot one near Washburn North Dakota in the middle of November and weighted it at 14.3 lbs on a digital fish scale. My taxidermist who has been doing taxidermy for over 18 years said thats the biggest one he has ever mounted.

Look up giant Canada goose.
The article I read said that the original first documented ones were in northern minnesota.
Illinois dept of conservation caught some of those and imported them.
It was in the 60's I think.
There are lots of giants all over the area from chicago to mattoon or a little further south.
These geese do not go south. They dont move until forced by deep snow. They simply fly to where there is less or no snow.
That is why you never saw one in louisiana or outside of the midwest.

The biggest one I've shot personally went 13.5 pounds. This year, my dad shot a 14 pounder and said its the biggest goose he's seen in his 30+ years of waterfowling.

My brother downed a big one this year. It was so noticeably larger than all the other geese around that we passed decoying shots at other birds just to get a crack at it. Took four confirmed hits to bring it down too. No clue on the weight although I don't think there is anyway it could have been more than 12 ish pounds , but it was definitely the biggest one I've seen on the ground. I'll post pics once I find them.
