A New Call

A guy my wife went to high school with started making calls a while back, so my wife ordered me one for Valentine's Day. Just saw a pic of it on FB, and I'm pretty excited about it. It's acrylic and wood, and he's tuning it now, so shouldn't be too much longer. The engraving on the band is a tribute to a favorite saying of mine. I once had it put on a hat, and wore that bastard around until it fell apart. I always tell my wife something, and if she chooses to do it another way, I say "nobody listens to Jim", and then when it gets fucked up, I would always say it again. Irritates her to no end. When I got the hat, I wouldn't even say it anymore, just point to it. "Honey, don't put that much shit in the wheelbarrow, just make two trips" [wheelbarrow hits a door and spills a yard of horse shit all over the barn][Jim points at hat and walks out the door past her]

Anyway, here's a pic. I'll post a sound file after I get it, provided I can run it.

That looks cool as fuck! Does he pour the acrylic onto a burl then cut it into blanks?

Never seen one like it. Your wife's friend may have found a niche.

That's my understanding. I'm concerned a bit that it'll separate over the years, to be honest. Don't know enough about it to understand how it "bonds", and what the different expansion will do over time, but could be I'm overthinking it.

What's that baby cost? You posting it here may have just got that guy more business than wants. Unless hes super expensive, then it'll just be DH.

I honestly don't know. I don't think they're that bad. I'll ask the wife tomorrow. She was going to get me a matching set, sort of like this one, so I don't think they're too expensive. She's not one to splurge on things non-equine related.

Burled wood pretty much has to be stabilized to turn well, so it's essentially plastic, too.

Stabilized wood...
The process is where epoxy is poured over wood that's then quickly placed into a vacuum before it cures.
The vacuum forces the resin into the pores of the wood...stabilizing it.
Get it?

Those calls may as well be one solid piece because they are.

Missed this the first time. Looks good Assa. Don't think that is typical stabilization as the wood doesn't have a green tint to it. Interesting to say the least.

Sometimes its easier to let him think hes right so he doesn't go on.

Call showed up today. Sounds pretty darn good, but runs different than my shore thing. Takes about the same amount of air, but you have to lay off on the up note, or it gets harsh. No complaints at all on the sound, just a learning curve is all. Could also be that I've only ever owned one new short reed in my life- all the others were broken in.

And on a side note, it doubles as a peacock call when my wife tries to run it.

Probably not broke in guts. You can look at the guts and tell if they're broken in or not. It'll have a reed shaped indention on the bottom set under the reed.

Lord knows there's no shortage of peacocks in the fucking woods around here. Those things are more obnoxious than turkeys.

Peacock is a fine meal.
