do you have a "go to" brand for calling? Can't go wrong with Grounds.. the Shorething is pretty solid as well...but don't bat an eye at Legendary Gear... very impressed by the Oldman I got. Have a white COD on the way....smokin' call!!!

Strictly hunting, I have zero interest in contest calling.

exactly...quality calling with realistic tone is far more effective than trying to duplicate every note in the book

I think the young hunters today watch too many videos and try to emulate that instead of sticking to basic calling and like you say having to use every note.

As has been said...."a live bird couldn't win a contest"

I've found Canadas the most callable of geese and have done so with a 25-cent garage sale squeeze-bulb bicycle horn, but I'd still suggest investing in a good instructional CD like Molt Gear's "Bad Grammar".

Sorry man but you can't talk about calls without the world champion showing up.
It's just a fact. Give it time and he will appear.
Maybe watch his video on tuning calls?

Here's a more thorough short reed goose call tuning video:

Anyone who's halfway serious about calling will benefit by learning to tune his own. Otherwise, it's a crap shoot as to whether the fellow who tuned it at the shop share much the same physiology, methodology and tone preferences.

To the original question: my experience has led me to favor high-end clucking "crack" over the "goosey" low end stuff most seem to want for Canadas, and while I'm enough of a call crank to have owned several makes and models, I've been happiest with Gander Valley's short, little (read: "quick") XXX, though not necessarily with its stock guts.

Not many speck calls I've not owned, but I've long favored an early hedge James Meyers and only somewhat more recent micarta Riceland, James turned down to his initial shape for me. Both have what started as Riceland guts that I've since modified.

Have had my best luck with blues and snow by either voice calling or torturing the XXX.
