With the wife having hip replacement surgery this past Monday my decision is easy, and I doubt seriously that I'd have gone regardless.

Dave, thought you'd like to know that the old dog and I made a quick hunt at your place this morning, and it was as if you were there.

Birds were piling in across the road when we arrived at shooting time, and we could hear more on Jarren's pond while walking in along the flood canal. Put Charlie and Agnes out in your north cut where the specks like to sit near the end of the canal, dug in along the levee - and proceeded to get frustrated. Was a surprisingly good flight from both the southeast and southwest, but everything was locked into Roy O's across, and my calling efforts were plainly counterproductive. Between a dead calm and the place's acoustics, the quietest call I carried sounded harsh as hell and pushed, rather than pulled.

Didn't take a whole lot of kneeling there wishing my quietest call, a Lares, was in the backpack I had, instead of the marsh box I didn't, to make me decide to call it a morning.

Between a dead calm and the place's acoustics, the quietest call I carried sounded harsh as hell and pushed, rather than pulled.

I think you could record a song of recording studio quality in that place with no wind. It was almost futile to call without a wind in that bowl.

I see Jarren's spot is open and offered. GO! I want to see some black bar pictures.

After the third or so bunch did everything but run-away beep, I knew I was screwed. No chance of changing their minds without calling and no chance of calling anything with what I had on hand. Have used a "too quiet" Lares to advantage in past seasons after having the same thing happen in a favorite tree lined corner elsewhere, but thought I'd modified my old hedge James Meyers enough to meet that need and bumped it to back-up again this year. Wrongo.

The Lares is back on the lanyard to help meet tomorrow morning's zero wind prediction, but having also toured my options, I'll most gratefully accept Jarren's offer, as well. Much thanks to both of you.

I actually did most of the packing up, one of those things where I know where it is and where it goes. I did let them pick up the roughly 4 dozen decoys we hunted over. They probably took a few dozen different pics of their birds and the surroundings and I enjoyed watching them enjoy themselves.

Also last week some of the guys shot a few on the levee past the blind. It seems a little more appealing and is away from the "ponds" we have. It was thick enough to go hide three so you and a dog should be fine

Birds had plainly been in the ponds, though most were using the south cut's indigos when we got there yesterday afternoon. Couple dozen specks and perhaps a hundred mostly big ducks. Thought about setting up on that levee, but the blind was easily fixable, so I put three decoys in the south pond's southeast corner and two more on the north pond's northwest corner and enjoyed not kneeling for the next three hours.

Aside from the hour or so of rain, it was an incredibly peaceful afternoon. Saw but two birds join those across the road and three big bunches join those on the Gardner piece to the south. All of those came super high but some offered a bit of hope after I let them break down on their own, then got after them when a swing had them headed my way. Close, but no cigar. Other than that, we saw eight or ten mottleds and mallards return to the indigo and watched a pretty sunset.

You have a unique sense when it comes to waterfowl that I am sure some would pay to learn a trick or two from.....

How to set decoys, when to call, when to not, when to call soft, hard, the whole gambit.

I know a few years ago, when David Smith and I made a hunt with you, I was intrigued with how hard you called birds that day.
But it worked and I have sense picked my spots to repeat that lesson, and had moderate success in doing so.

I know my son would learn a trick or two from you for sure!
