Not sure I have the gonads to tackle that big levees jungle with cliff edges, especially with this little machine..... PARISH....

Thanks! I love working on a tractor. I guess it's from my younger years growing up on a dairy farm, 24/7/365.

Ellie didn't shed much weight this season as she usually does due to inactivity  We went out on this nice afternoon to do some swimming retrieves. I plan to do this this as often as possible through the summer in the late afternoons or early mornings, temp and humidity considered. She doesn't have a stack of papers behind her or a wall of ribbons, but she is really appreciated in the blind and is a loved, spoiled family member.

I used my phone to film this and didn't think of the gopro or other camera until we finished....quality sucks.

Maybe no ribbons, but just being steady makes Ellie a pretty rare one in the real world.

And my guys are envious of the pond you've found her. We've still not come up with a gator safe replacement for the Dixie pond they used to train in. All the others I know in the area have either doubled as dump sites or are so near their owners' homes that we'd set their dogs off and be a nuisance to our hosts. As it stands, they're in the shallows so much that when they do hit a bit of swimming water Marsh's hind legs are reaching down to push off bottom, instead of swimming him high in the water like every strong swimmer I've had. Reminds me of Chien, who was raised in Klondike before we had the Dixie pond and habitually reached for the bottom all his life - leaving him literally only half as fast in deep water as my last little Brittany, who swam with his whole back out of water. That's worrisome.

HA! It's all good till the real things show up. When that happens the human forgets to pay attention to the dog and the dog knows it. Makes for bad habits.

The ponds are here on my property, so I'm lucky in that way. I wanted to find a legit marsh environment to use but I think this'll work.

That was my concern, because as I've mentioned, shallow, able to reach water is all she'd worked in. Seems we'll be ok.

Count your blessings. Having gator safe ponds is about all you can ask in our part of the country. Deep water marsh is just too risky.

Well.....There's only 721/2 days remaining until teal season and I still have no definite word on a place to hunt, the anxiety is building by the day. I looked into White Lake"s (WCA) teal hunts and didn't realize you can only do (1) one per year. Thats Poo Poo for me, and other free-for-all public land is not an option. NO! NO! Not gonna fight the crap. Hopefully by the end of next month I'll get a response from one or the other.

It's really hot and muggy out right now and I can't wait for the cooler north winds that usually blow in September signaling teal season is on. Though short lived most years, they are welcomed. I just hope to be sitting in a mosquito infested blind at that time... :D

Finally spoke with the Marceaux place's prospective buyer today. Believe he'll be well overextended if he seals the deal and plans to just buffalo what's there for a while.

Meanwhile, the trail to your blind misses you and Blake terribly. Like to not got through it on foot myself the other day, and said buyer says he's found it easier to ride his four-wheeler in the fields than on the levees. Welcome to paradise, Jack.

We haven't talked about that, but I'd be surprised if he's not planning on hunting at least part of it himself, as I met him through his looking for a place. (And his getting talked into taking over the project of trying to make a marsh pond where nature doesn't want one by the big cheese.)

HA! All it takes is a little blood, sweat and frustration to keep that trail open. Riding in the cut will be a mess with stuck 4 wheeler's and or side by sides early on in the season.

Jarren » Wed Jun 29, 2016 6:39 pm

Curious, did he say What are his plans are with it? just hunt it or try and fix it up to crawfish or farm?

If it's the same one I've heard talk of, he was going to lease one or both of the blinds for 10 to 12K each. Also mentioned plans to get a farmer to plant the property. For a farmer, that place must look like a scene from a horror film, and must make his wallet quiver.
A lot of work and money will need to be dumped on that place to bring it back. Water control, even when all is fixed, still has to be an expensive and time consuming process,at times. Only way to drain is to pump out, that is unless the outer canal is very low.
That would be a nice, enjoyable project for me if I had endless amounts of the green stuff.... stupid money I call it. I haven't had any numbers to match on my lottery tickets lately, not even one!

Don't think it's too late, you could still slip in and "steal" it for the asking $600,000...

Making me nervous for you. Not one of the Grand Chenier dogris flats south of 82 is it?

Not known for that but we'll see. More of a teal grey duck thing, but the open water there will definitely be attractive for those butterballs. Wouldn't mind seeing ruddys again, either. If this was Pecan Island I'd be a little more concerned.

Rode up to the northeast corner of Louisiana where I hunt this evening. Rice going to be a little late this year due to spring floods.
First pic is our field, second pic is much larger field where the next blind south of us about 3/4 a mile is.

Storm was brewing

High fence operation south of me several miles

Combines are already in a few fields here, but the wet spring keep folks from discing a lot of last year's stubbles that, in turn, made volunteer crops, and the ducks are loving those that hold water.
