2016 2017 Season

Re: 2016 2017 Season

Postby DComeaux » Thu Sep 22, 2016 12:45 pm

I'm sitting here at my desk for lunch thinking about the weekend and I'm not real confident of our chances of taking or seeing teal. The situation now, and what it has been for the last three years, they're either where you are, or they're not. I will load up a few rods, crab nets, cast nets and have a little fun after the hunt Saturday...... Hopefully the bird cleaning delays us a bit for this outing.

We're bringing the go devil (BRIGGS) back in for service, and if this doesn't work, I'll use it as an anchor and slap a Honda on it. NEVER, EVER had any luck with Briggs engines.... PIECE OF S%&#!.... I'm just glad I don't have to pull start the damn thing cause it would already be on the bottom of the pond.

Saw some very high flights headed your way, so maybe...

The 16hp BS Vanguard on my GD is super fussy about any little amount of condensate in the fuel and was constantly needing its carb drained until I put an inline water separator/filter unit on the boat.

Forgot to mention that Sea Foam is a gift from the Vanguard gods.

Yeah, it's covered, and has been since we got it. (23 HP vanguard) We bought it used and were told it didn't run right. When not under a load it runs well, and we're just now putting it under a load and it sucks. I've had a few go devils over the years and maybe the newer Briggs are different, but the one I had powered by Honda was a dream to run compared to the Briggs engines. We're not running ethanol now and after the shop visit, carb rebuild and what ever else they find, it will never drink ethanol.

More often than not seems to work wonders with crotchety motors run in tough conditions drinking less than perfect fuel. So a duck hunter's pal for sure !

Me and Blake

Weather- mostly clear light ESE wind

Birds- 2 BW

Didn't see very much this morning and very few shots heard. We watched and listened to three BW that were in the decoys from before LST until they flushed when we shot into a 25 bird flock that came over them. Was neat to hear their sounds and watch them preen.

We're headed back to the marsh for some crabs, shrimp and reds.

Can't do that to save a morning in the rice or fresh marsh. Have to settle for Lougnoun's boudin and hot links.

Me and Blake

Weather- Cloudy, Thunder storms and showers in the area but they left us alone. Wind variable E to ESE to calm then NE

Birds- 1 BW

We did see a few high flocks during the hunt but nothing wanted to play. I think we were the only ones hunting in our marsh. A good many had pulled out either last weekend or after the hunt yesterday, as we noticed many empty boat houses, and the morning traffic was awfully light compared to other weekends, it was quiet down there. Can't say I blame em for bugging out.

We got the decoys picked up and everything stashed ready to redeploy for the big show. The go devil will get a little TLC and we'll be back out in a couple of weeks to work on the blind. It's still under by inches and the water level seems to be dropping. Hopefully we get a few north winds to make it go a bit faster.

FRONT COMING THROUGH TOMORROW........GO FIGURE!

Rick....There were a couple of these on the property cutting grass along the road...Didn't get to drive one though.....

Well that sucks! Our motor ran pretty good this weekend compared to what it's been. The original issue was it starves for fuel when under load and it did that on me a few times. Other than that, the sputtering and farting had stopped. The mile or so run back to the designated boat launch area went great with no issues. DAMN BRIGGS! Someone will go through it tomorrow and I'll cross my fingers.

On the trip to the launch site I had a 20-25 count, or larger, shrimp jump in the boat with me. Those things are thick in that marsh right now, and we can't move without seeing em. I'd love to drag a net in that Lake.

That's exactly what Corey's was doing under a load.

Tell him to check his oil level. One of Go devils trouble shoot recommendations for this issue is oil level. The fuel pump works on vacuum which is taken from the valve area and the hose is in that cover. Without a full oil level the vacuum amount is not high enough to work properly...... It didn't work for us, but for some it did.

11/12/2016 opening day

Myself,Blake and Bill

Birds- 16- 7 green wing 3 blue wing 3 shoveler 2 ruddys 1 scaup

Fair amount of ducks this morning and we saw a lot of species. Limit was there, but we passed up some blue wing while I had ellie out on a retrieve and had more on the water waiting for her. Ruddy ducks were thick and we could have limited easily on just those. The amount of shooting made it tough to decoy the "big' ducks.
Blake had never taken a ruddy so he dropped a couple of drakes. Doing this on my phone is not fun and time consuming without good service.

Wow. It's a treat just to see one here, and I don't recall ever seeing them when I hunted Pecan Island. Know I've still never shot one. (But Doug's great grandson shot a "buffalo head" in the rice this morning, which is pretty weird, too.)

Very cool! Take some close up pics to share of those so we can see, never really encountered them myself

We were ate up with hooded mergansers today, though, with some stud drakes fluttering by.

Blake wants a drake in late season plumage, so we'll be taking a few more. They were all over the decoys this morning. Didn't see one merganser today.

Heard a Robin this morning and just got a text that there was a big flock in the trees in my yard.at home .......Migration? Super moon?

We saw a big flock of robins where I hunt near Arkansas line, and also we saw mostly mallards. No spoons, pins, and only one batch of teal.

Loads of specks though.

11/13/2016

Weather - Mid 50's - High overcast- light to moderate NE wind

Myself,Blake and Bill

Birds- 11- 6 blue wing 1 mallard drake 1 gadwall 1 mottled duck 1 shoveler 1 scaup

The early morning started out slow and had me a bit concerned about our chances, but the birds began trickling in later. We usually shut down at 9:30 but the bird movement, as it was, had us sit till 10:15. There was still some activity as we were leaving. We did have some missed opportunities and I need to work on our top cover for the blind. It's a bit wider then I would of liked which makes it difficult to cover and keep it natural looking. I have an idea and will give it a try next weekend. We got busted a few times by some high birds we broke down, but the lower birds slip right in.

We decided early on that we'd leave the spinning wing decoys at home this year. It seems that every spread we see, and most if not all of the guys hunting in the area have at least one in their spread. We're going to be different, with that and the blind style. This may not make a big difference now, but I'm hoping mid to late season we'll see results compared to others.

May not amount to a hill of beans for us....but we'll see.

Rick... We had a "buffalo head" sit in the decoys Sunday morning and I had a conversation with it for a while before he left. It was very vocal.

I have mine on a remote. Will experiment with finishing birds, but no doubt it's helpful in getting the attention of high birds when it's really bright late in the morning and I don't see them.

Looks like we may get a good push this weekend. They'll ride on a 100 mph stream.
