No, they're for show. Me and ellie are doing the grunt work. Speaking of Ellie, shes doing great!! better than I expected. She's showing long range in this bigger water, which at times has me concerned, for no reason i might add. She seems to love this new environment and aint scared to travel.

Today is my birthday and I just got a call from the wife telling me that I should be a 2nd time grandfather (pop pop) today. The midwife says by 2:00 pm by the look of things..... :D

Weather - High broken to overcast skies moderate NE wind....temp mid 50's?

Myself and Blake

Birds- 0

We lost what we thought was a dead on the water mottled, and shot really bad on a couple of other chances. We brought in and watched quite a few scaup, jacks, bufflehead and ruddys swim in the decoys. Those seemed to be the targets for most down here this morning as the grays and others stayed put in their protected spots. Not seeing the high big flocks as on other hunts, we need a new push of birds. Hunters leaving their blinds pushed up big wads of dabblers which would just circle and return to their sanctuaries. They know the drill, already.

Driving in this morning we noticed something on the shell road. When we pulled up to it Blake opened his door to a wounded speck on his last breaths. We threw it in the back of the truck and cleaned it when we got to the camp. From the look of the 3 pellet holes, it must have been shot late yesterday afternoon and landed in our marsh, eventually stumbling onto the road. It will not be wasted or coyote food.

Congrats to you and the proud parents!

Also glad to see we're not the only ones with lazy birds staying put in smaller waters, especially the grays, and marveling at the thought of them already being in such a pattern. I'd agree it's just a stale pattern, stale birds. We're going to try them Monday and Tuesday on the predicted stout south winds

Weather - High scattered to broken skies 5 to 10 mph NE wind turning east later....temp low50's upper 40's?

Myself and Blake

Birds- 11 7 gadwall 2 blue wing 2 spoonbill

Not fast and furious but enough to scratch out a limit, if a certain barrel wasn't crooked. The gadwall (new to the area?)worked well to the call this morning, it was fun to watch em...hard turns and talking back... The teal are plentiful but the little buggers are skirting us. They must know whats up, so hopefully this next front brings us some fresh birds. . We'll be back out there either Tuesday or Wednesday evening, depending on my work load.

Yours truly with the birds

We decided to leave after the last volley, and Ellie and I are headed out to pick up a blue wing on the way to stash the pirogue and climb in the boat and go devil. I wanted her to get it, and you can see it ahead of her near the land (click on photo to zoom). She made some awesome long retrieves on chipped birds this morning, she will not give up.This is a 100 yard dog paddle, of which shes made quite a few these last few days

Solid morning, and always good to hear Ellie's living the life.

But that photo makes me wonder if you've tried a kayak paddle?

Not yet. I've had a slight crosswind on every hunt that I've used it to my advantage. I do see a kayak paddle working well, though.

As an avid pirogue-er, I can attest to the prowess of a kayak paddle. Those with them smoke passed me in sufficient water, though I always favored the stout regular paddle for leverage when water was scant. You might try it, Dave

That paddle is also my crip wacker. Not sure how I'll do that with a blade on each end.

Another +1 for the regular paddle indeed. You'd really only see the kayak advantage on long straight runs chasing a crip or fighting a wind to get to boat. This also assumes you've the strength and shoulder flexibility to really get after it, that motion can be tough on rotators

OOf...I tried a cast net yesterday...not so good. I haven't quite healed up, and may never be right without surgery.

Weather - Clear- temp upper 40's brisk NE wind

Myself, Blake and Bill

Birds- 6 2 blue wing 1 spoonbill 1 green wing 2 gadwall

Got here around noon yesterday and we went out to the blind to check on it it after that big south wind we had this week. My worries of not getting enough timber in the ground when we initially put it in place, and not makig it a priority and was on my mind. The blind had popped up and we had an afternoon of work, but we were able to get it down and brushed for the hunt this morning. We made a trip to the lumber yard after the hunt today to get more timber....my shoulder is shot.

There's a good bit of birds around but they're holding tight and know whats up. We saw some big flocks climbing up and heading north. The weather forecast for tomorrow is good and we seem to have more hunters showing up, so the bird movement may be a little better then today. Saturday may be a wash out with heavy rain in the forecast, and that extends through Monday. We may pick up the decoys and head back early, our first split ends Sunday. We'll be watching the radar tomorrow evening.

A couple members hunted our blind this morning, no wind, so the hunt wasn't any good.

We're at what's considered normal water level now. We have tide, low and high, it was the wave action and
Procrastination on my part for not driving enough timber, in a timely manner, Thats what caused my problem.
