Terrible times in south LA

I've not been to the camp he works for and only know the general area, but unless they built it in a relative hole, I'd think it safe.

Can't say the same for our little town, despite an awful lot of people's best efforts to wear #2 shovels into #1s and break a slew of strong young backs hauling bags, we were told to shut down our sandbagging efforts a little while ago, as the sandbagged levee has breached along the lake in front of Cheryl's aunt and uncle's place. (Two old coonasses who say they're not leaving, but will hopefully boat on over to our "ridge" if/when push comes to shove.)

Can't say I'll miss the cramps or old guy morning miseries that have shown me I'm not the shovel hand I'd like to think, but the community effort was heartening, and I met a lot of great folks from away. Last young fellow I worked with this afternoon was with a mission group and from Washington State. Said he'd been here (working his young butt off) two days and already loved it. Said the people here are a whole lot nicer, but it sure seemed to me that Washington State had reared at least one great kid.

We had 21" in 24hrs at one point, but the issue isn't so much what we had here as what's backing up from the man-made impediments between here and the Gulf. Thankfully, the locks are at least open this go-around, and they've blown some levees in Rockefeller.

Yea there was a little white spot over lake Arthur indicating at least 20".

Learned this morning that the levee breech wasn't as bad as we were told and readily repaired - at least for the time being.

I've been here in town filling and loading sandbags again today and haven't made a camp pass, but also haven't heard of anyone new getting pushed out of Klondike. Just don't know. Do know I'm here at the house taking an A/C break because I'm fricking old. Have worked in the summer marsh long enough to know it's not a good sign when I can't decide whether to puke or crap, which is about where i was a bit ago. Don't get old.

Now that's wearing on me, so I believe I'll may make a quick pass by Doug and Mary's before rejoining the crew.

Turned out sandbag operations had been suspended again with an apparently healthy surplus, hopefully good news, so I did make a Klondike run. Little more water, but not a big change from where I last saw it. Of course, a lot of folks were screwed pretty much from the git-go, but friends and relatives of ours in the immediate "Klondike" area who thought they could stick it out are still all right and Rt. 14 remains above water. Doug and a young great-granddaughter were taking turns messing with her sister trying to nap in a camper when I dropped by.

More sandbagging this morning, but the river seems to have crested at a level that can be retained well enough for the city pumps to be sufficient. Knock wood. Too many folks lost too much, but the town is counting blessings and thankful to many.

I guess. We're not out of the woods, yet, so I probably shouldn't have said anything that might put the gris-gris on us. Well, it's really not "us" here on what some have called "happy hill" but a lot of good folks on lower ground.

Going to be a complete fluster-clutch. No telling how long it will be before we can get to the marsh and raise the two boats little doubt sunk in the boathouse, and all but one of our others, including mine, are in a flooded location, but being on trailers and initially above water may have spared them. Fortunately, it's one I can get to in waders or by pirogue to assess their condition and hope to tomorrow, if there's nothing more useful I can do in town. Probably be doing our own motor repairs on however many went under.

Then, too, all but one of the blinds (which I'm virtually certain was left uncovered) will have likely popped (or, worst case, cratered), and we'll be hoping that that means straightened aluminum turnbuckle hooks, rather than pulled or broken anchors that require more time, effort and perhaps difficult to get serious augers than just resetting the blinds and changing out turn-buckles.

Farmers, of course, have their own special problems to deal with, so there'll be even less help from them getting the ag land stuff ready, whenever access to that comes around, and our tractors were marginal at best for use on ground that wasn't nearly so saturated as now. So that will be its own set of joys.

Has been my intent to tell the big cheese it's time he start doing his own dealing with the ag land preparations, farmers and renters - or find another dumb-arse to, but this might not be the time to pull that plug.

I'm sure that's been mis-threaded, but it was my understanding they were blowing levees in Rockefeller a couple or three days ago. So much of the official news has been inaccurate that it's little wonder one can't trust the grapevine. Sorry for the interruption, Dukman

Yeah, I put that in the wrong thread. It came up on TV 3 today.

I figured it was going to be pretty rough Rick and I'm sorry you won't be able to "enjoy" the preseason as much as normal. I hope by October things will be better and you can enjoy that month of the regular season preseason.

We'll just have to see. Being old and cranky may be the worst of it.

Darren, you may have met or heard of Nolan and Katan Broussard who live on Perreau Island to the SW of the Oak Island camp. Been concerned about what might happen to their place, but they stopped at our house for coffee yesterday, and all should be well, as their "island" (high spot in South Louisiana marsh) elevation is 18'. They're in good spirits and anxious to get home.

Nothing doing in town this morning, so I went out to "the 95" to see how the three boats stored there had fared:

Thankfully well, as mine was in the deepest spot:

And the only sunk boat was this one:

Also test fired my waders and found them good to go another round.

Made it to Cherry Ridge this morning and saw that what was in the boat house I could see in with short boots is still floating:

Hope to get into ours for farm releases via airboat later this week and see what the blinds look like.
