I don't know pecans about contest calling or calls but an MVP has been my primary hunting call for a dozen or so seasons, and I was disappointed with the CWF's relative responsiveness and undecided about its tone. That, and it was one of the only two calls I've run for which toneboard orientation was an issue. Stump said that was on me, but others have assured me I wasn't alone. So I guess you may or may not find that so.
And the Daisy Cutters have been all over the place. My first was from the half scroll era and had a uniquely harsh tone mallards liked but ran like a truck, tended to air lock on quiet clucks and chucks, and wasn't at all versatile. But Jim thought it too good sounding of an insert to risk sanding all the air-lock our of, so I assume it was a solid example of its kind. When its cork tab broke they made me an insert that was supposed to be as close to the old DCs as they could make (according to Cole), but it is quite different in both handling and tone, in that it handles and has range much like the MVP, only with a touch more rasp, and lacks the harshness. (Used to call it the Janice Joplin of susies.) Don't know if it's just what's been the modern standard version DC or what's been going in some of the recent said-to-be "old style" special edition DCs, but I'll audition it as an "other" species call this season, as it tunes up well for teal kacks, gadwall beeps and gaddy and pin hen squacks.
I'm funny about letting my primary calls out of sight, but if you'd like to play with a MVP for a while, PM me a mailing address, and you can hang onto my back-up until the season.
(Expect to also audition Stanley's Deceiver for max volume this year, but don't have one in hand, yet.)
