What's a good price?

I don't know what their break-even price is, only that our guys down here say they no longer see profit until second crop - and can no longer get rice farm loans without crawfishing, as well. Supposedly, some Mississipi Delta super farms held their rice last year hoping for better prices and are now dumping it to make room for this year's crop.

Whew, I wish I had never picked up a small guts speck call. Over the last 5 years, I picked up some bad habits with the quackhead speck. Friend let me borrow his 3/4 acrylic Riceland and the learning curve is steep. I think I would rather one of the other Ricelands as this one seems super sensitive to hand placement.

Another friend is going to lend me his vendetta speck for a week or 2 to play with. I'm determined to get better and become a "sustained air" caller, even though I killed a few dozen last year with the burst air method. Having a spot where they don't mind being helps too.

Yea I've been watching the redbone instructional videos on YouTube. Seems to be the best I've found for starting from nothing and building on it.

Told my blind partner to keep watching your stuff and keep practicing. He's single and and lives by himself, just started his first real job. So he'll have a lot of time to practice. As quick as he picked up contest calling for ducks, he'll be calling specks this fall.

Thanks John, I know I appreciate it being broken down as simple as possible to understand the correct process without trying to figure out it and developing bad habits.

Gotcha. Have you tried any RNT's? I've got a 40th anniversary short barrel that can do everything I want it to.

I don't know pecans about contest calling or calls but an MVP has been my primary hunting call for a dozen or so seasons, and I was disappointed with the CWF's relative responsiveness and undecided about its tone. That, and it was one of the only two calls I've run for which toneboard orientation was an issue. Stump said that was on me, but others have assured me I wasn't alone. So I guess you may or may not find that so.

And the Daisy Cutters have been all over the place. My first was from the half scroll era and had a uniquely harsh tone mallards liked but ran like a truck, tended to air lock on quiet clucks and chucks, and wasn't at all versatile. But Jim thought it too good sounding of an insert to risk sanding all the air-lock our of, so I assume it was a solid example of its kind. When its cork tab broke they made me an insert that was supposed to be as close to the old DCs as they could make (according to Cole), but it is quite different in both handling and tone, in that it handles and has range much like the MVP, only with a touch more rasp, and lacks the harshness. (Used to call it the Janice Joplin of susies.) Don't know if it's just what's been the modern standard version DC or what's been going in some of the recent said-to-be "old style" special edition DCs, but I'll audition it as an "other" species call this season, as it tunes up well for teal kacks, gadwall beeps and gaddy and pin hen squacks.

I'm funny about letting my primary calls out of sight, but if you'd like to play with a MVP for a while, PM me a mailing address, and you can hang onto my back-up until the season.

(Expect to also audition Stanley's Deceiver for max volume this year, but don't have one in hand, yet.)

The Deceiver keeps coming up the winner on "loudest call" threads, and I like the youtube demos, because crisp and clean keeps coming up the long range winner for me in the field. So we'll see...

Meanwhile I was serious about the MVP loan if you decide you'd like to try one.

Went to the annual sporting clays shoot at dry creek ranch yesterday. My brothers, cousins, and friends who shot this event for many years. Always a good time. Came home with a shotgun for winning first place in 3rd division. My buddies son also won first in one of the youth divisions.

Appears to be a little cool front coming through end of the week. This is forecast for where I hung in northeast LA. Image

I'm fired up about the predicted northerly winds, not so much for possible teal movement but for saving us from the depression in the Gulf (Pound timber!) and pushing some of this flood water south.

Yes all good things. Not to mention cooler drier air.
