Preseason

Thanks to Rick for the encouragement to try a log book this year, (he'll probably appreciate me not spamming his log so hard with my reports hahaha), and Olly for setting me up.

I hunt in far northeast Louisiana not too far from Arkansas line. This will be my 3rd year on this farm. First year was milo, last year rice, this year rice. Hoping for the weather we had in 2014-15 to happen again. Last year was pretty tough, lots of water everywhere and mild weather. I'll probably own log the hunts that I'm actually present for unless my partners have a good enough shoot to take the time to write about. Was able to lease this blind because I had a good reputation from a previous landowner who sold his farm where I was leasing, and my current landowner said, "well if you can lease from him, you can lease from me". pit is 12 feet long with a dog box on each end. It's 5 feet deep and 5 feet from front to back. Flat half top on the south side of pit and an open 2.5 feet on the north side. Can easily shoot to the north and south. Thankfully, despite facing due north, we are still able to work birds to the north side of the blind, and shoot them with the sun shining on them and more importantly in their eyes. Easterly and westerly winds sometimes can be challenging because you don't know which side of the blind they are going to flip flop too coming from either the east or west. I'll try to upload some pictures here in a few.

Yes but it's very low profile and we hide it well.

It's roomy and hunts 4 men comfortable and safe.

I'd surely beat whatever's left of my brains out on that roof.

Lot of people say that but I can't remember anyone, including myself hitting their head when standing to shoot. I know most of the pits down there are smaller style A frames. It's a lot easier to hide folks under that top, that's for sure.

Guess I'm going to have to become a statistic this year for sure now. No more threats. This is a promise.

Nice pit, look forward to your hunts. I'm likewise hoping for much less available water for the birds this year and some early stout fronts.

Like everything else I'm sure, we've bought some new gear for the upcoming season.

Decoys

24 Avery FFD specks (got these from guide Garrett Cole who used to guide at DOUG'S I believe) very lightly used and in good shape.

2 dozen pintails
6 shovelers
6 full body mallards
2 full size mojo mallards with remotes**

Guy that was in the lease with me last 2 years had the Mojos and he moved to Montana. Have to be able to turn them off for geese and sometimes ducks.

Picked up a 40th anniversary RNT short barrel to join the Daisy cutter and RNT acrylic speck call. Image

I'm not sure if he had anything but specks.

Garret "Don't need no stinkin' dog or shells in the gun." Cole:

He's a good guy. Heard he's partnering with James Manning, who pro-staffed Blue Collar, this year, so that may explain the sale.

Rick, from what I heard they are using deception decoys now but I may be wrong.

That's what I've been using, but I'm glad that I was able to get the first version, rather than the current ones.

Looks like we are going to have the opposite of last summer early falls weather.

Hoping we will dry out some next month and October so the harvest will go smoothly up in northeast la. Combine ruts in rice fields are not fun.
