Oddest thing. The ducks I saw up in NEArk were flying in pairs and pairs of pairs. It's not January...yet.

Hopefully hens that didn't raise a clutch pairing up early. I noticed a lot of pairs in the first split with mallards too.

ALTHOUGH we both got the finger by specks this trip more then we ever have in our lives and he has 30 years of speck experience and I have 26.

The birds have wised up,it will get to where they are uncallable,it is coming

Took the deer rifle for a walk late yesterday to a spot that turned out to be a speck roost. First group clucked while dropping in to land, next did the little three note gabble ("rr, rr, rr") while landing, next bunch had a coupe three not yelpers popping off as they lit, and the last bunch didn't make a peep - which was also the case with everything already in the water. After that, the mosquitoes drove me off without having learned the secret handshake. Again.

Didn't really expect to learn anything, particularly at roost time, just like to listen to them up close and no longer have as many chances as I'd wish.

The greenhead in the picture was hit in head when I went to pick up,1 pellet. Beautiful shape. I said I will pick up by feet and save for wall,smoother to death with knee in back once I get to the levee.

I picked up by feet,THE BIRD CAME ALIVE AND FLEW OUT MY HANDS,by the time I got over the shock of yes indeed that bird just flew out your hands,I shot at, but missed, and bird went back down in open bean field

This time no chances,I shot on ground and picked up dead bird

In 36 years of hunting with a gun I have NEVER had one fly out my hands---I have had that with doves flying out of a game bag,but never a duck or goose

Had something similar happen to a young man hunting with us a few years ago for teal season. It didn't fly off, but he was out picking up some "dead" teal and a flock was approaching, so he set the pair he had in his hand on the water, made a couple of shots, and when he reached down for the birds, one had disappeared. Never did find that bird.

Great hunt, had to tell a buddy yesterday that we need to let them keep coming if they have their feet down and not encourage them to do something they already doing.

I know you wish you could have been there yesterday morning with your guys.

We killed a young pin drake Sunday that was as fat as can be. All our birds from Sunday and Monday were loaded with fat under skin and around gizzard.
