.38 Special

.38 Special

Postby The Duck Hammer » Mon Oct 21, 2013 10:06 am

Anybody who has one what kind of hollow points do y'all shoot? Every time I look, which isn't often, all I can find is hollow points in +P. I have an older Taurus that isn't intended to shoot +P.

That's why I'm shooting lead round nose shells now but I'd like to have something more lethal if the big kitty gets a jump on me and I don't want to turn my gun into a hand grenade with +P.

How? .357s and .38s are basically the same thing. I got a Blackhawk at my disposal as well and it will shoot .38 hollow points.

Really?? Just get some .357 rounds for your .38 then. I am sure you will have no problem finding hollow points.

38 special is not the same as .357 magnum.
Look. One is longer. It has more gunpowder. More powerful.

I can shoot 38 special in my Taurus 357.
There is a difference. People tend to freak when I pop off 357.
38 special, not so much.

Because it is the same diameter bullet.

Cant answer that but they are the exact same bullet. I think it may have been to make it so that they weren't confused.

The design criteria for the .38 Special is 158 gr round nose lead bullet........Using hollow points or +P is not as effective as proper shot placement. If the .38 Special won't do what you want it to do, get a gun that will.

You can also shoot .30 caliber carbine ammo in it if you're feeling adventurous. We outfitted a lot of the local tribesmen in Vietnam with Korean war surplus .30 cal. M1 carbines.
I had a few .38 S&W pistols I carried over there and ran out of ammo for them. One of the guys told me he heard that you could do that so I loaded a pistol with a cylinder full of the .30 carbine ammo and gave it to one of the Montagnard tribesman scouts I didn't really like too much to test fire for me. ( he didn't have a clue)
Damn thing shot just fine, so until I could get resupplied with .38 ammo the carbine stuff did the job.

A rose is a flower by any other name.

Its just a name, caliber is really a naming convention or nomenclature.

Just go with the flow here AT, or I will be forced to Haiku your ass.

No. Quite rare actually. Look at rifle cartridges. .223 is actually .224, .270 is .277, .280 is .284, so on and so on. They are only names.
