Especially in a field situation---terror .700 or .675, patternmaster xtra long range, kicks xtra full--- turns even cheap loads into formidable weapons---not 3.5"--simple 3 " 1.25 oz. or target loads on the sporting clays course---with the more open offerings---patternmaster along with these others make more open chokes

Someone on here will see this and agree with their effectiveness on waterfowl though

Has nothing to do with one's self worth as a hunter, very effective tool---I can put a speck 10 yards from the blind on the right conditions----but I still use these and will continue too

John, I got schooled on a hunt in La several years ago, and spent too much time chasing cripples. My buddies just laughed at me and told me I needed a Terror Tube. Bought one (.675 I think), for the next year, and was amazed at the difference. Will even use it hunting doves if I am in an open field. Also, shooting a cripple on the water at 40-50 yards, using 3" #4 steel, is deadly, and consistently saves a lot of chase time. When i am in situations where the shots are close (potholes, creeks, etc...), I always have a modified choke in my hunting stool for switch out.

John, we're speaking of the gunning at my blind. And if you get your birds to 10yds, that extra choke is a liability there, too.

If, like Mervis Saltzman once told me about his 10ga, "(you) shoots 'em where they is," that's a whole 'nother topic...

I was fortunate to make a week long trip to northern Alberta (High Level) some years back, and the hunting was nice, but so much more to take in. It was a great experience, as I got the opportunity to watch the aurora borealis one evening, though a bit calm and no color, it was awesome none the less. It was a full moon night, sitting at the camp around a fire, which was situated on the top of a high bluff overlooking the peace river. We sat in silence in the cool night air listening to canada's down below on the roost. Those would serenade us to sleep every night. Was a peaceful feeling, and that trip was calming, the hunting was a bonus.

Sat for a moment while typing this, reliving that scene. I would love to go back one day.

In the right conditions, which is not usually the case---but will happen some days

Point is that I am a very ethical hunter and try very hard to get the birds as close as I can every time, most of the time that is not 10 yards, but as close as possible and as mentioned above the choke is a valuable tool. Saves me chasing cripples for sure, puts birds down and staying put, due too broken wings, neck, head trauma

My experience with tighter patterns at our ranges has not been the "clean kills or clean misses" I so often read about but, rather, more misses and more chipped birds.

John I use a terror 700 in my browning gold. I use it for clays, doves, ducks, and geese. Everything but squirrel.

It’s an awesome choke. Thought about trying to find another one for my new maxus since they don’t make them anymore.

There’s a lot of young guys who shoot full and xtra full that I hunt with and they are hurting themselves when they hunt with me because I’m getting them inside 30 before I even think about shooting, and most of the time inside 20.

I actually had a guy complain last year about getting them too close l. He was wanting to shoot at them as soon as they got inside 50 yards because he had 3.5” hevi metal 2’s and a super full choke.

Decoying birds were not the goal for him, it was shooting as often as he could.

He’s not going to be hunting with us anymore though.

Tell him he can always wait as long as he wants before he shoots.

My Dad hunted everything with his exta full choke. When it came to bunnies, he always let them get as far away as he could before he shot them unless on that rare occasion he spotted one sitting in the bushes.

Guy I referenced sent me pics so excited about his rig shooting a 9” wide pattern at 40 yards. Great for cripples....not much else unless you’re pass shooting

The Great White North is pretty cool. Been there twice. (Alaska) I'd go back right now if I could.

From my research and I’ve done a lot of pattern work. 1’s and 3’s going about 1450 FPS pattern beautifully from my terror 700 out to 40 yards.

I had a Trulock precision hunter tube that patterned real well too.

Haven’t patterned the new maxus yet, but I assume it’ll pattern similar to my gold, since they’re invector plus.

One reason I really like the terror is it will shoot all the different loads, including black cloud, which I personally like, mainly because I’ve been able to buy them at around $10 a box.

Lots of these new chokes don’t recommend shooting the BC’s and make a special choke for them.

I’ll go back to regular steel once these BCs are gone unless I can find them for same price.

I’ll be getting some #1’s for my Oklahoma trip in January when we go after Canada’s and mostly mallards as far as ducks.

nah,you will at least try or consider the method or product in question. Those I speak of immediately say worthless just for the hell of it.

So many of the things I was once certain of have turned out not necessarily so, at best, that I'm leery of building strong convictions. To the topic at hand, there was a time when I convinced myself that my 20ga 1 1/8oz of high antimony lead 5s "baby mag" handloads were too weak to kill mallards with reasonable reliability. Had to have a 12 and 1 1/2oz of those hard 5s for big ducks.

Now that I'm an old guy, I find myself happily shooting them with 2 3/4" 20ga steel 5s. Though I do have some preference for 7/8oz payloads over 3/4oz. That 1/8oz difference perhaps being a head thing.

I found a half a case of 2 3/4” estate steel 3’s for $5 a box once. Those shells absolutely smoked mallards out to 40 yards. I’d buy them again but can usually find 3” 3’s for same or cheaper.

Tyner Petrus in west Monroe and Monroe are biggest estate dealers I know of. Used to get that load for $99 a case every year.

Kent's Upland Steel. But at least a couple of our marsh guides have shot or are shooting Kent's 12ga teal steel 5s.

About 1400 FPS?

The Upland Steel I'm shooting is marketed at 1500 and the Teal Steel at 1350. No idea what they'll actually chronograph.
