Looked good to me. I just made Marsh cry with my own 6-n-1 replication. Don't reckon I ought try that in the blind.

I'd post other samples, but can't show too much public land in too good of light :D

None within miles of our Delacroix lease, but close to the launch where it's super lush and shallow they are thick. Hell there's plenty of them in the parking lots at the boat ramps

No need, I've had the technology for several seasons, just don't many whistlers during most.

Haven't heard from your neighbors how the squealers have been for them but don't think they've been seeing as many as before either.

Did hear 3rd hand that they had decent opening weekend for teal but slowed thereafter.

I've not talked with any of the Mallard Bay crew since before the season, and could only guess they did about like the rest of us with few strong days.

Date: 11/8 Wed

Time: morning

Location: SE of Gueydan

Cloud Cover: cloudy and hazy

Wind Direction and Velocity: NE moderate

Temperature: sweating by set-up, comfortable later

Moon phase:

Special Notes: Expected it to suck, but had the chance and went.

Waterfowl Activity: Didn't see or hear a speck the first 40 minutes of LST, then saw nothing below nose bleed or intending to cross my area. And little that wasn't.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Was a moral victory just to make a couple of the four or five little bunches I saw come make a loop before heading back on their intended course.

Hunters: Marsh and I

Guns: Model 12

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): Marsh was patient.

Special Equipment: half dozen Deceptions

Curses: Next to no birds and what precious little we saw reminded me of why i used to tell folks specks don't land until Thursday after the opener. They be scared crapless.

Kudos: The "good" news was that I saw nothing on the way out or home to make me wish I'd stayed later. And Marsh sure was happy to stretch his legs.

Birds By Species: DNS or even think about it, so the first scratch of new season is behind me.

No hair pulling here. I wouldn't have called to any of what I saw this morning if I thought anyone was watching. Silly far and high.

I'll be in the marsh checking out a troublesome boat first thing this morning and don't expect to get near Gueydan until showing some folks their blind later in the day.

Also have to finish pulling the fourchettes that have shown since my last round. Got a bunch yesterday afternoon after putting out speck FBs but got too cocky for my hip boots on thin flotant and filled them, wet my wallet and phone, chilled my butt and said "enough". After that and recorking my duck calls, I'll have nothing left to do but wait.

Dang near forgot: the first mallard I've seen this year, a lone drake, came by the mudhole while I was putting out specks, and I watched a flock of 6 or 8 might-be-mallards put in by Issac's while flower picking my south side. Were also more jacks around than previously, and Gabe said several bunches of both they and teal buzzed his east-side blind while he worked on it. So the front's apparently carrying some game.

Fwiw, there were geese crossing low over your Talen's Rd buddy's piece when we came out of the marsh at 11:00.

Don't recall but one speck bunch crossing the marsh, and I just saw some little ducks on our marsh's east end and a mottled pair on my end. Ed saw a little wad of what he guessed grays from the east blind.

Cherry Ridge guys said it's still weak, too, at least as of yesterday. And I watched when I heard a mudboat crossing there and saw nothing rise above the treeline between us, so if they moved birds, it was likely jacks and/or teal.

Been sitting on my hands waiting to show some OOSers the blind they leased, and ended up organizing and changing out old corks on the calls I use or keep stashed against the day I forget the lanyard. Going to audition an Allan Stanley Deceiver this season, as they're said to be the loudest available - though to my tin ear and indoors I can't say I'm certain it's any louder than the MVP Butch bored out to be an extra loud hunting call, which has been my BIG GUN in past seasons. Can say the old MVP is more nimble and fun to run.

Bottom line, though, is now that I've done what's long been my favorite and saved for last "desert" to these seasonal preparations, I'm fresh out of stuff to do and still have all of tomorrow to somehow burn.

Ever sat in your blind on day before opener to enjoy the calm before the storm?

Did for a bit both yesterday and today and enjoyed the calm for a little bit before "too calm" worries started creeping in. Mind you, I know we'll probably be fine once "the storm" starts, but cripes it looks grim from the blind just now.

I hear you, I’m looking forward to bringing my nephew to the farm Saturday for youth hunt. Going to be about 38 or so, clear with a little wind.

Figured I’d put this here since Rick’s log is popular with the coastal guys

The estimate of 1.54 million ducks on this survey is half of last November’s estimate of 3.06 million and 23% below the most recent 5-year and long-term average of 2.0 million. Over the last 5 years, this November survey has provided estimates from 1.02 and 1.21 million in 2013 and 2015 respectively to 3.06 and 3.12 in 2016 and 2014 respectively with this survey estimate falling between but at the low end of that range. All species except blue-winged teal (LTA=183,000), shoveler (LTA=93,000), and scaup (LTA=46,000) were below their long-term November averages, and even those species did not exceed LTA by much.

Got that discouraging e-mail today, too. Am about as happy with the Mudhole's set-up as I've ever been, and we'll do what we can with what we get to see and have some fun, regardless.

Decent wind direction for you tomorrow.

Probably gained a few birds since survey with this front.

Getting an unusual SE wind tomorrow morning. I'd bet that the forecast is wrong. It's always off by at least 90 degrees.
Figure it out when I get there.
It will be SW. Anyone want to bet?
I've heard that it's incredibly stupid to fuck around with a crazy man's head.

Date: 11/11/17 Sat

Time: morning

Location: Mudhole

Cloud Cover: clear

Wind Direction and Velocity: next to nil easterly?

Temperature: cool

Moon phase: waning crescent 42%

Special Notes: first split opening morning

Waterfowl Activity: Next to no big ducks were even seen, but teal and jacks were plentiful, at least by comparison.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: Area gunfire had everything on skates. Group of five mottleds pushed off like they remembered the blind or, more likely, didn't like the hunter show in the blind but turned and came pretty as could be to woodie squeals on a speck call.

Hunters: 2, Donnie and little Joel

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): Marsh didn't have anything real difficult to deal with and did a very solid job.

Special Equipment: Spinner and modified Mallard Machine, hereafter likely referred to as SOS, as will little doubt continue to be the case, on for teal and off for most everything else.

Curses: Crowd control was really bad.

Kudos: Nice guys and enough of the right kind of birds to make it work.

Birds By Species: 1 bw teal, 11 gw teal, 3 mottleds and 3 ringnecks

Photo Ops: Marsh with two of the three mottleds we clipped from a little bunch of five:
