Opening day tomorrow. I went out and set the decoys. I pounded a couple stakes to put my spinners on. Just finishing the last post and the head flies off the beater hammer and into the lake

This particular hammer was the beater my Dad used to use when he was an ironworker. He welded his initials on the side. My wife needed something to use her punches on. My Dad gave her this hammer. They have the same initials. It has a lot of sentimental value to both me and my wife. So there is no way I can leave it on bottom of the lake.
So I finish setting out all the decoys.
Now its time to retrieve the hammer. It's in about 4' of water and it has been below freezing in the morning most of the last week. I did what I had to do. Stripped down. Waded out to where it went it. Since I had pounded the stake in, the spot was well marked. I actually found it pretty quick and was able to roll it onto my foot and lift it up without having to fully submerge.
Back to shore, shake the water off and quickly put the clothes back on. It was cold, but not as bad as I thought.
I'm now retiring the hammer and buying a new one so if it ends up on the bottom of the lake I can just leave it

Hopefully tomorrow the only thing swimming is the ducks
