Workday #1

Rode up to the farm today to bail water out of the blind, cut Johnson grass for our divider panels, and cut more Johnson grass just to have.

Blind had about 2.5’ of water in it.

Nothing the bucket and I couldn’t handle
Image
Did gag over a dead mouse...I’m weak about stuff like that.

No snakes or anything, bad dry up there right now.

No ruts in field though, and farm roads in good enough shape where I could drive truck to the Johnson grass patch and fill up the bed.

Had help that was much easier on the eyes than my lease partners.

Pretty good stand of “indigos ??” Growing on east side of pit where it was too muddy to plant in spring.

Some native grass on west side where it was also too wet to plant beans.
Image

Told other guys they could come back and pick up the trash and muck out the blind. They’re all in their 20’s and very capable.

Productive day.

Note: they have moved my old pit, re-leveled field and are working on irrigation pipes just like they told me they were going to back in June. Pit is now in middle of field on a turnrow.

They're money in my book. Prefer them to rice.

Yea I’m not exactly sure if that’s what it is, proper name sesbania I believe. No green leaves on them.

Maybe when they sprayed beans before harvest?

Still gives some contrast to an otherwise slick beam field.

That would probably do it for all the broad-leaf stuff there.

We're supposed to have a rain event this Sunday. I know you guys would like the rain but I like seeing it dry. I noticed a lot of plowed and leveled rice fields after the harvest with this dry weather. Those going to crawfish still have stubble and the pumps are running.

I hope we don't get too much, I have a tower going up in a cow pasture in Mansura and don't need soggy ground.

I’m fine with it dry now cuz all the fields have been plowed, would have liked to see it somewhat wet to where all the fields could wouldn’t get plowed.

Doubt it's enough of a rain event to change the color of the map.....marsh hunters rejoice!

Date: October 21

Time: “morning” dove hunt

Location: clearcut we sprayed, burned, and planted last year.

Cloud Cover: low and heavy

Wind Direction and Velocity: SE light to moderate.

Temperature: 70’s, comfortable till about 11 am

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: when I shot my 3rd bird, Amos saw it falling, immediately went for it about 20 yards away in some thick goatweed, and brought it all the way back. I was surprised and proud...being that he’s a German Shepherd, and has never hunted with me before. He proceeded to help me find and he picked up the rest of my limit. He’s got a very soft mouth. He was raised around chickens and doesn’t bother them at all, so I think he was a little confused at first about picking up something with feathers and not getting in trouble.

Just neat to watch how excited he was to find and pick em up.

Dove Activity: slow early then we noticed where they all wanted to be. A large dead oak tree.

Waterfowl Responsiveness:

Hunters: me and my bride although she just watched

Guns: browning gold

Malfunctions: I should have been done about an hour earlier and Amos would bark if I shot and there was nothing to fetch.

Dog(s): Amos

Special Equipment: mojo dove and 3 clip on decoys

Kudos: first good dove hunt in years

curses: none

Birds By Species: 15 mourning doves

Photo Ops:

Neat family outing, but Amos doesn't look so sure you really want the dang things:

Might want to check a quote of this to see the piece of code that will embed youtube in a post.

I think he was unsure about all the feathers in his mouth and not being in trouble for having a bird in his mouth haha, but we praised him afterwards and he caught on quick. Mocked me by barking on my misses, when he was expecting to go find one with me.
