I did pick up 2 big sacks of deer steak, burger, and sausage on way home. Pretty good deer season for me, now just need the ducks to pick up.

Date: dec 23

Time: I left at 8:30 to ensure a scratch, was planning to stay till 9 but no need.

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: heavy

Wind Direction and Velocity: WNW 10-15 mph

Temperature: mid 40’s and holding

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: 2nd scratch in a row, having scratched in a couple seasons. 3 this year so far

Waterfowl Activity: had a big big bunch of teal early that made one pass about 50 yards south of blind and then went on.....thought they were going to come first pass cuz they were already buzzing over water when we saw them. Rest of the ducks were all very high and headed north to new water in Arkansas.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: zip

Hunters: 4 members

Guns:

Malfunctions: didn’t have mojos out...maybe the teal would have come had we had them out?

Dog(s): ace

Special Equipment: none

Kudos: we have a ton of snows around to watch

curses: need new ducks

Birds By Species: 0

Photo Ops:

Date: dec 27

Time: packed up at 1 pm

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: heavy to high to mostly sunny by 11:45

Wind Direction and Velocity: 15-20 NNE

Temperature: holding in low 30’s

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: got to bring nephews again

Waterfowl Activity: pretty good push of high ducks headed south from 8 am to noon

Waterfowl Responsiveness: finally got some single specks in right, big bunch of teal at 10 am came pretty, mallards responded well

Hunters: Eric Colin and hunter

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s):

Special Equipment: mojos on remote

Kudos: finally saw a push from north and 2 big specks...hunting late made our hunt. Had 1 bird at 10 am...big bunch of teal came around 10:10 (50 or so of them)

curses: screwed up twice on mallards and let a big bull canvasback get through early while messing with something in blind

Birds By Species:
5 green winged teal
1 mallard
2 specks

Date: dec 28

Time: left at noon

Location: pit blind

Cloud Cover: mostly clear with big cloud bank to west and north that eventually moved over us around 9:30

Wind Direction and Velocity: NNE 10 mph

Temperature: 27-31

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: no ice in our big wide open field due to strong wind last night but started to ice up in places this morning

Waterfowl Activity: not as many working ducks as we’d hope for. Geese are all but gone from our area. Still lots of big waves of migratory headed south

Waterfowl Responsiveness: ducks we shot came pretty, like new birds.

Hunters: me ridge and his sister Cheryl

Guns:

Malfunctions: lost the 3rd bird of ridges triple that was just barely tipped and ace couldn’t mark

Dog(s): ace

Special Equipment: 2 mojos on remote, mostly off once ducks broke

Kudos: we shot very well, first pintails of the year

curses: pintails took our only group of mallards, had a group of gads bump last minute...I assume on ice or something cuz mojos were off and sun was out

Birds By Species:
2 pintails
3 gadwall
2 green winged teal
1 canvasback

Photo Ops: forgot to take pic of big pretty pintail drake.

Season Log

Postby Ericdc » Sat Dec 30, 2017 3:21 pm

I guess the push will be tonight or tomorrow. Very quiet in jones area today for a Saturday and same old local ducks. Our geese are gone too, can’t remember this few geese around New Years. Hopefully they’ll come back once we thaw out next weekend.

I wonder who has the birds in this state? Reports up and down this SW marsh are slim straps. Like you mentioned, it was pretty quiet for a Saturday, and it's not because people weren't in the blinds.

I don’t know, it’s depressing, we are usually killing them good between Christmas and New Years. I’m sleeping in tomorrow and heading south to hunt with Corey Monday.

Date: dec 30

Time: left at noon

Location: new and old blind

Cloud Cover: heavy clouds

Wind Direction and Velocity: calm to north 5-10

Temperature: 40’s

Barometer:

Moon phase:

Special Notes: went to my pit solo and did some decoy work then joined my buddy in my old blind till noon..misery loves company

Waterfowl Activity: decent late morning mallards and pintail flight but they wouldn’t come in. Think a lot were locals that have been loafing on Robbie’s water since they don’t hunt much.

Waterfowl Responsiveness: should have had a speck but might should have given him one more pass, downwind shots are tough

Hunters: Eric rod Robbie

Guns:

Malfunctions:

Dog(s): Rod’s dog was the best behaved dog I’ve hunted over this year.

Special Equipment: mojos on remote

Kudos: good company

curses: no birds even with good north wind from 9 to noon

Birds By Species: scratch

Photo Ops: last year today, what a difference sunshine makes for us. Image

About to migrate south and hunt the holiday tomorrow in the marsh since our field on state line will lock up tonight and remain that way until next weekend.

Yea it’s discouraging, even if I had one of those loud ringing calls Rick uses, gotta have something to blow at with it. Haven’t seen any higher flights going any direction the last 2 trips I’ve been down there when conditions seemed decent.

Reports from my area is that the shallow fields 4-6” deep are frozen solid...

Ours is a little deeper on west side of pit but I imagine east of pit where water plays out is like an ice rink.

Wow!! Not what I wanted to hear. We’re on the fence about going up Saturday to hunt Sunday Monday Tuesday. Sounds like a lot of thawing has to occur between now and then.

Where do you hunt? High supposed to be near 50 Saturday with sun. I’m going up mid morning Saturday to hopefully make a hole and hunt into the afternoon. Definitely going back Sunday for the big south wind.

It should, especially of we get some rain Sunday evening. I plan on hunting weekend and Tuesday looks like a good sunny day after clouds and rain Sunday and Monday.

One of my lease partners took off this week....really sucks that he can’t hunt because of all the ice, but he has to schedule ahead and knows New Years week is always good for us.

He’s going to SW Oklahoma to hunt Monday through Wednesday and I hope they do well.

Our ice is several inches thick still. 2 of my guys are up there now walking around on deep end of our field that’s normally mid thigh deep water.

I’m so bummed out. We will end up losing 7 days of hunting due to the big freeze. Not a thing I can do about it. Not excited about anybody’s hunting further south to drive anywhere tonight.

Going to watch weather next week and try to pick a day or 2 to go.

Deer better watch themselves this evening.....
