2017-2018 Pre-Season

Postby DukMan » Sun Aug 06, 2017 12:19 pm

Well this will probably be a short post... but we'll getter started here...

Season is less than 25 days away, Early goose and teal season is quickly approaching. The water out on the property has finally dropped to a point where it's manageable to get out there and get some work done on the blind... I have the next 3 days off and I'm working on cleaning decoys and re-flocking heads. This coming weekend going to get out to the land and put a door, dog ramp, and brush up on the blind.

The blind popped it's ass end up about 3" with the flood... hoping it settles over time. We'll see...

With the increase in water I'm seeing a lot less birds than I did this time last year as I assume we lost quite a few nests with the flood and the water all over has birds spread out.

I'll post some pics soon and hopefully be ready for the season opener....

Stopped out on the property ... Tuesday and was disappointed by the duck action... only saw 8-10 woodies trading back and forth... hoping most are either waiting on flight feathers or tending to a late nest hatch after re-nesting ...

The dove plot (millet) I put in is popping up nicely... best I can hope for is maturity and a cut in early October as long as we don't flood again...

Assume brown-top and hope it makes it in time for your season. Though maybe cutting it close will help cut out the blackbirds that always seemed to beat the teal to our Jap millet...

Used to get all worked up about duck season but not until late-October. Would partake in the annual Halloween candy-eating ritual (lasts a week) and have a tooth-ache all November. Yeah those were the days.

Went out yesterday with my buddy to put a door on the blind, build a dog ramp, paint it, and get it brushed up...

I was expecting to have to deal with a few feet of water but to my surprise .... nothing... the marsh is dry as a bone! We went from 13+ feet of water to nothing in a month.

It made the work easier but hoping it returns soon for duck season... I'm going to broadcast jap millet in front of the blind in the mud flat to possibly get a quick food source in for late sept as it's 45 days to maturity.

I still need to brush up the blind better than ever because all the surrounding vegetation was killed off with the flood. I'll take a few more pictures later this week when I get out there to put the finishing touches on it!

You're going to have to pay me to rain dance. Quit (for free) and it hasn't rained for at least a week. Bone-fucking dry and my bees are pissy as hell. Happy?

If they land where the camera did, you're covered. Pickin', of course.
