Don't spend a lot of money on ice rods. None of them hold up to the crap you put them through on hard water. Throwing them in buckets, dragging them around in the sled, getting them all iced up, they just don't last. Better off buying cheapies and every once in awhile you get one that actually holds up alright and you get some mileage out of it.

As for feeling the bites, the spring bobber is your friend.
